Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Program Search

Many products you use in your home and yard contain hazardous materials. Improper disposal of these products can pose threats to human health and the environment. Also mishandling of some of these materials can cause fires, serious injuries to people and animals, and groundwater contamination.

Examples of these materials include:

  • Paint, gasoline, paint thinners, solvents - Flammable
  • Pesticides, cleaning products - Poisonous
  • Acids, bases, cleaning products - Corrosives
  • Flares, pool chemicals - Reactive
  • Others - Fluorescent lights, ballast, computers and electronics, cooking oil, propane tanks, oil, antifreeze, batteries
Collection programs for these hazardous materials are commonly referred to as “Clean Sweep” programs. These programs began as one-day programs and continue as such in many parts of Wisconsin. Other communities have decided to provide a higher level or service to residents through seasonal or year round programs.

The information on this website will help you to identify facilities in your community that collect these hazardous products from your home for proper disposal.

For many years, Wisconsin has been a leading state in reducing environmental impacts from hazardous wastes. ERC has been able to document such success through data you can find on this site. This site provides recent and historical data, beginning with data about household hazardous waste collected in a one-day collection program in 1984. ERC data and resources address: one-day household collection programs, permanent household collection programs, and programs for collecting special wastes from households, such as mercury.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection grant program allows local governments to collect agricultural, residential, and business hazardous wastes with the aid of grant funds. Most local governments offer farmers and residents free or nearly free hazardous waste services while businesses are usually required to pay for most disposal costs. Businesses with agricultural pesticides may be eligible to receive a subsidy from the department. Additional information on program services can be found elsewhere on the website
