Pharmaceutical waste

UW-Extension’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center (SHWEC) has developed these key resources for managing and reducing pharmaceutical waste, beginning in 2006 when Wisconsin communities first began collecting household medications.

SHWEC offers innovative solutions for collecting and disposing of unused medication, for reducing drug waste and for finding sustainable funding for household medication collection programs.  SHWEC has also done basic research into how much pharmaceutical waste is being generated in Wisconsin and how its residents are disposing of it, and it has spearheaded a regional effort to keep pharmaceuticals out of the Great Lakes.
