School of Education Board of Visitors


The UWM School of Education (SOE) Board of Visitors is an external advisory body to the Dean of the School. The Board's purpose is to provide counsel and support and to foster the achievement of equity, diversity and excellence in all aspects of the School.

The board is comprised of a maximum 21 members who provide input on how programmatic changes impact the larger community (e.g. teacher education programs and their impact on the workforce). A minimum of four members will be represented from outside of Wisconsin. The Board of Visitors is an important link between the School and its external audiences. It is integral to growing the School's reputation, relationships and giving/fund-raising campaign efforts.

The Board is advisory in nature. Its primary functions include:

  • Providing advice, support and counsel to the Dean on matters for which such external advice is critical, such as strategic planning, closing the achievement gap, student accessibility, and programmatic development;

  • Establishing an important link between teacher/educator preparation and economic health in the community, region, state and nation, with particular emphasis on urban communities;

  • Forming an advocacy network for the School; and,

  • Securing and providing funds for important programs and needs of the school and actively advising and assisting with major fund-raising efforts.

Individual board members are a mix of alumni and non-alumni, knowledgeable educators, national experts, and others who understand how education impacts the economic and social economies of the city, region, state and nation.
