Bruce Guadalupe Community School Students Art Displayed - July 2013

Students at Bruce Guadalupe Community School (BGCS) created art that is featured at "The Big Idea" exhibit in the Latino Arts Gallery which is housed on the BGCS campus.  The Big Idea exhibit contains over 1,000 art pieces that showcase the connections students made with their artwork related to the math and language arts programs. The goal of The Big Idea initiative is to help students learn to make connections and critically think through different problems and concepts visually.  The program is sponsored as part of the Advancing Literacy and Math through Arts (ALMA) project.  The Big Idea exhibit runs through August 30th in the Latino Arts Gallery located at 1028 S. 9th Street.

Capitol West Academy
Students Walked in "Strides for Soldiers"
- June 2013

Capitol West Academy hosted a fundraiser to assist military members who have been physically or mentally injured.  275 students from grades K4 to 8 ran or walked to raise about $1,000 which will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.  This project helps 300,000 service members who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Veritas High School
Listed in "America's Best High Schools
- May 2013

America's Best High Schools (AMHS) ranked Veritas High School as one of the "best 2,000 public high schools in the nation."  The AMHS website indicates that schools selected "have proven to be effective in turning out college-ready grads."  Schools are chosen based on six components:  graduation rate, acceptance rate, AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, AP/IB/AICE scores, and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course.

Veritas High School
Students Volunteer at the South Shore Half Marathon
- April 2013

Several students from Veritas High School assisted at the South Shore Half Marathon on April 7, 2013.  The student volunteers performed various functions to help with the marathon which drew approximately 1,000 runners.

Wisconsin Schools of Recognition Teacher Fellow, Veritas High School - April 2013

Congratulations to Veritas English Teacher, Joe Neman, who has been chosen as a "Wisconsin Schools of Recognition Teacher Fellow." The 2013 fellowship is sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and Fund for Teachers.  Mr. Neman has been awarded with a grant of $5,000 to travel to Latin America this summer to visit the areas that served as inspiration to the writers of "Magical Realism."

Police Chief Flynn Conducts Student Listening Session at Veritas High School - March 2013

On March 26th, Police Chief Edward spoke with students at Veritas High School.  The students had the opportunity to ask and get answers to their questions and concerns.  The Chief's visit was part an initiative to improve relations between the teens and officers.

Read Across America at Capitol West Academy - March 2013

On March 1st, Capitol West Academy took part in the National Education Association’s “Read Across America Day” program. Tony Clark from Fox 6’s Real Milwaukee Now participated in the event and broadcast live from the school.
