Summer 2004 Course Offerings
Data Analysis, Probability, and Statistics Summer Course
August 9 - 13, 2004This course will address the topics of data analysis, probability, and statistics for grades 6-12. Teachers will be able to explore these topics across grade levels as well as within their own grade levels. Resources for the course will include the NCTM Navigations books that provide model lessons promoting the NCTM Standards for Data Analysis and Probability, and will also involve extensive activity with graphing calculators.
Communication and Reasoning in Mathematics Grades K - 8
July 26-29, 2004This course examines strategies for developing students' ability to communicate their mathematical reasoning both orally and in writing. The course will include discussion of the development of mathematical vocabulary, district learning targets, and expectations for mathematical communication on district and state assessments in mathematics.
Number and Computation Development: Kindergarten, Grades 1-2, Grades 3-5
July 19-23, 2004Three Number and Computation Development courses were offered at these levels: (1) Kindergarten, (2) Grades 1-2, (3) Grade 3-5. These courses studied how students build their understanding of number and number relationships and how they begin to use their growing understanding of the number system to solve computation problems.
Content-Focused Coaching and Leadership in Mathematics
Summer Segment June 18, 21-25, 2004; Continuing through the 2004-2005 School YearThis collaborative project between the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) supports elementary (K-5) teachers in developing coaching skills to facilitate collegial conversations in mathematics at the school level.
Balanced Literacy in the Elementary Science Classroom
Summer Segment June 28-July 2, 2004; Continuing through the 2004-2005 School Year, Summer 2005, and 2005-06 School YearThis 2-year collaborative project between the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) will support school-based teams of K-8 teachers in developing teacher understanding and use of balanced literacy approaches in science classrooms with effective teaching of science content.Using inquiry-based teaching and learning strategies, project participants will design action plans that incorporate balanced literacy and science in elementary classrooms while building school-based leadership skills to convey their learning to colleagues in their school.
