NCTM Publishes Kepner's and Laughlin's Book
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recently published the second edition of Guidelines for the Tutor of Mathematics, by Connie Laughlin and Henry S. Kepner Jr. The updated edition includes excellent help for the prospective math tutor, who, although successful in math, lacks teaching skills. It presents guidelines from a variety of sources: the authors' experiences, research on tutoring, and direct work with students and others involved in tutoring. The book emphasizes that the tutor is most effective as a coach, a supportive listener, a critical - yet compassionate--mathematician, and a cheerleader.
