Consisting of a seven day summer institute, as well as monthly project meetings and online networking during the school year, this project assists participants to: - Create a knowledge base of ways in which data analysis and statistics relate to the key mathematics topics, in particular the contextual settings and opportunities for the use and mastery of algebraic reasoning and significant algebra skills.
- Understand the integral nature of data analysis and statistics in mathematics learning, rather than seeing it as an enrichment topic.
- Understand the importance of contextual approaches to meet the needs of all students.
- Link data analysis and statistics to the district school-to-work mandate program.
- Develop competence in using tools, such as hands on materials, graphing calculators, computers and the world around them, to explore data analysis and statistics.
- Increase their mathematical content knowledge and connections.
- Increase their pedagogical content knowledge and skill in all areas including technology, for effective instructional and assessment practices.
- Engage in disciplined inquiry and action research.
- Establish collaboration opportunities at all professional levels.
- Consider the Advanced Placement Statistics curriculum and assessment as an option for mathematics beyond algebra for students in the Milwaukee Public High Schools.
