Journal of Science Teacher Education

The Journal of Science Teacher Education is no longer being managed by the CMSER.

Goal:The Journal of Science Teacher Education is the official journal of the Association for the Education of Teachers in Science (AETS) and serves as a forum for disseminating research and theoretical position statements concerning the preparation and in-service education of science teachers.

Description:The Journal of Science Teacher Education (JSTE) features pragmatic articles which suggest immediate ways to improve conditions in methods classes, in-service workshops, and teacher recruitment and retention. In addition there are data-driven research articles that show evidence of the effectiveness of teaching strategies and interventions.

Each editorial team for the journal serves a five year term. The operational office and editorial board are currently housed and sponsored by the Center for Math and Science Education Research at UWM, thanks to this grant from AETS. The UWM editorial board is responsible for recruiting new members for the review board. Each year, seven members finish their five year term and seven new members are named to the board.

The editors manage the submission process in the following manner:

  • The managing editor assesses if each manuscript is appropriate for the journal.
  • On the basis of topic, three reviewers are assigned to each appropriate manuscript and a blind copy of each manuscript is sent to each of three reviewers.
  • The reviewers decide whether it is acceptable, give feedback regarding strengths and weaknesses, and suggest revisions.
  • Upon reviewer completion, the editors make the final decision based on the reviews.
  • Accepted manuscripts usually require revision and once the author makes those, the managing editor, using electronic submission of the revised manuscript, typesets it.
  • A galley or proof is sent to each author. This step is the last opportunity for the author to make changes or corrections.
  • Once the author has approved the proof, he or she then sends camera-ready copy to Kluwer Academic Publishers in the Netherlands.
  • Kluwer publishes and distributes the journal to libraries and AETS members.
  • Throughout the entire review process, a relational database is maintained and enables day to day tracking of manuscripts.
