Milwaukee Telecommunications Project

Goal:This project aims to improve Milwaukee Public School (MPS) teachers' comfort and experience with the Internet so that they can alter their teaching in mathematics, science and social studies to include the Internet, thereby improving the depth of topics and instruction.

Description:
For the instructional component of this project, all supporting materials have been developed into on-line versions, CD-rom versions, and paper manual versions. There are three modes of instruction for this project.

  • One credit courses are delivered at the COSMIC Center computer labs at MPS.
  • Online versions of the course are monitored and facilitated by MPS lead teachers.
  • After-school workshops are available to create awareness and solicit further participation for the in-person and online courses.
As a part of their involvement in the course, participants engage in online projects. We have created projects for each grade level to give participants an optimal first experience that is truly connected to the targeted content that they teach at their specific grade level.

In addition to the instructional component of this grant, we are creating virtual field trips of topics and places of interest to MPS teachers and students. Studies have demonstrated that virtual pre-field trips often amplify the benefits of the onsite field trip. These virtual field trip components include digital photos, video, and sound.

Due to participation in the Milwaukee Telecommunications Project, participants:

  • Become involved in collaborative data-sharing and Internet-facilitated projects that connect with the targeted content for various grade levels in elementary, middle and secondary classrooms.

  • Receive mechanisms and resources they can use to improve the quality of their lessons, and to gain access to recent changes to subject matter information.

  • Further disseminate how to use the Internet in the classroom to their colleagues.
