Tips and Trouble Shooting
We have included some frequently asked questions from students, faculty and staff. If you have a question or a tip that you think should be included here,
please email the E-Portfolio Training Coordinator
(ed-portfolio@uwm.edu).
Basic Questions Regarding LiveText
1.What are the system requirements for LiveText?
An internet connection is required to use LiveText's online tools. A high-speed internet connection (DSL/Cable/T1) is strongly recommended; 56k dial-up minimum.
LiveText is a web based subscription service; no software is actually installed on your system. Since no software installation is required on the user's computer, LiveText can easily be accessed from public access computers such as those at local schools and libraries. It also means that you will have access to your LiveText documents anywhere you have access to the Internet.
Is there a preferred Internet browser to use when I use LiveText?
Firefox is the best browser to use. Safari and Internet Explorer tend to have problems when using LiveText.
Firefox is a free downloadable browser.
Go to
www.firefox.com
to download a copy of the free browser.
When I copy information from my word processor (i.e. Word, Word Perfect) the formatting is lost and very strange. Is there anything I can do is make this work, or do I have to retype the whole thing directly into LiveText?
The most successful way to do this is the save the word processing document as a webpage, or html. Then copy and paste from that view. Your changes of the document appearing as you would like is much more reliable.
2. I am a transfer student and used LiveText at my previous institution. Do I have to purchase a new account, or can I continue to use my current one?
Your LiveText account must be transferred from your old institution to UW-Milwaukee. This request can be made by emailing support@livetext.com. Your email message will need to include the following information.
The name of your old institution
Your old email address (if you know what it was)
Your LiveText login name
Your new email address
A statement that you wish to have your account moved from your old institution to UW-Milwaukee.
As an instructor, how do I create a Group in LiveText?
Login to LiveText at http://www.livetext.com.
Click on Groups on the right-hand menu column of the LiveText screen.
Click on New and give your group a title, e.g., “Completers Spring 2008”; click save.
Now your new group will appear on the “Groups” list. Click on the “members” button. Then “add members” by typing in their names, separated by commas.
Click the “search button.” A list of user names will pop up.
Click on the ones that you want and then “Add Selected Members.”
The names of enrolled students will appear under the new group that you set up.
3. What do I do if I forget my password?
Click on this link:
http://college.livetext.com/misk5/forgot
and follow the prompts.
3. Will my professors be able to look at my work in LiveText before it is finished?
No. Everything you do in LiveText is completely private until you decide to share or submit a particular document with someone else. As the creator of the material, you alone control access to it.
4. How can a “visitor” access my materials?
A Visitor's Pass can be created to share documents with members outside of the LiveText community (e.g. prospective employers). After a Visitor's Pass is created, one or more documents can be added to the pass. The pass can then be distributed to one or more visitors. Visitors may access only documents shared with the pass from the Visitor's Pass area on the LiveText homepage.
Click on the Tools tab.
Click on the Visitor Pass tab.
Click the New button.
Give your Visitor's Pass a unique title, usually the name of the visitor, and description.
Click the Save button.
Now go back to the e-portfolio you would like to share with a visitor. Click on the "Share" button.
In the "Share" window, click on "Advanced Share" at the bottom of the window.
In "Advanced Sharing" click the Visitor's tab. Then choose your visitor from the drop down menu titled "Add from Visitors."
Click Add and Save and Finish.
Then supply the visitor with the number code that was created in step 4. When the visitor goes to the login, he/she will use this code in the “Visitor Pass Area.”
5. How do I deal with the Popup Blocker?
If you have a Popup blocker installed on your computer, some pop-up windows may not open. If you find that pop-up windows are not opening on your computer, please disable (turn off) your Popup blocker. Also, you may need to add this site to your trusted sites. For Firefox go to: Preferences > Content > and click the "Exceptions" button next to "Block pop-up windows." Once you get to "Exceptions type "college.livetext.com" (no quotations) to the list.

I am saving my Word documents as txt or rtf and the document in not copying and pasting correctly into LiveText. How can I fix this problem?
The issue is related to the Meta data in the documents (coding you don't see), and it is confusing the HTML on the web service. Save as a txt, open it in notepad (this removes any meta Data) save, then copy and paste it text into the LiveText edit window.
The font size in my e-portfolio does not look the same in the edit view as it does in the preview. How can I correct this problem?
T
he Meta data in the documents (coding you don't see), is confusing the HTML on the web service.
Save as a txt, open it in notepad (this removes any meta Data) save, then copy and paste it text into the LiveText edit window. Now do the formatting, such as, text size, color, bolding, etc. in the
edit window of LiveText.
