Walk-In Advising Session


Walk-In advising is designed to assist "education-intended" and "education-admitted" students with quick questions. Due to the large number of students assigned to each advisor, you may experience a "wait" during walk-in advising. The wait can be up to an hour during registration and the first week of classes. If a large number of students are waiting, we may close walk-in early to ensure everyone waiting can see an advisor. If you do not want to wait, we suggest scheduling an appointment in advance.

You should not attend walk-in advising if:

  • you are transferring from another institution to one of the teacher certification programs in Curriculum and Instruction,
  • you are inquiring about the Post Baccalaureate Teacher Certification program
  • you want to switch your major to a teacher certification program
  • you are seeing your advisor for the first time

Schedule an appointment by calling (414) 229-4721. These types of appointments require one hour or more with an advisor.

Preparing for Your Walk-In SessionIn order to get the most out of walk-in advising we suggest you come prepared.
  • Bring your copy of your program sheet. 
  • Have your specific questions ready. Jot down (no more than) three questions before going in to see your advisor. Focus on getting these questions answered.
  • If you need help in choosing classes for next semester, come prepared with those classes you would like to take. Your advisor will help you determine if these classes will meet program requirements. 
  • Be courteous to your fellow students who may be waiting. Keep your session as brief as possible. (5 - 15 minutes is the norm)
  • Review your academic advisement report in PAWS prior to your visit to ensure its accuracy.
  • Silence your cell phone so you and your advisor are not interrupted.
