Coursework and Program Requirements
When determining how many credits you need to complete to get your degree and/or become certified, or the time it will take, you need to consider five components.
General Education Requirements (Undergraduate only)The General Education Requirements (also known as GERs) provide structure to your education while giving you the freedom to design an individual academic program. The competency requirements assure basic student competencies in English composition, mathematics, and foreign language. The distribution requirements provide a broad body of knowledge in the arts, humanities, and natural and social sciences as a foundation for specialization.
Science ContentThe science content needed to be certified to teach particular science(s). For example, if you want a Biology and Chemistry certification, do you have enough science courses for those specific certifications. We can easily provide you with a complete analysis of your status and what coursework you would need to finish the certification(s).
Education CourseworkThe MACSTEP program is divided into three semesters. The first semester occurs during the summer, the second semester during the fall, and the third semester during the spring.
One of the key components of the program is its alignment between coursework and field experience. As a result, the courses are sequential and cannot be taken out of sequence. Before entering the program, determine if you can complete the program in the three semesters. Be aware that if you miss a course you must wait until the following year to restart the program.
For undergraduates the educational course work is usually completed their senior year after their content course work is completed or almost completed (only 1 or 2 courses left to complete). It is also an option for undergraduates to finish their science or mathematics degree, then immediately enter into the summer sequence of the MACSTEP program as a post-baccalaureate student.
Miscellaneous Coursework The third component, consists of coursework and professional tests, and pertains to all science certifications. You should look at these, and we can also provide some guidance on whether you have met these requirements, or how you can fulfill the requirements.
The State of Wisconsin has three statutory requirements all students need to complete in order to become certified to teach science. The three requirements are as follows:

- History/Philosophy of Science (2 credits)
- Conservation of Natural Resources (3 credits)
- Study of Wisconsin Native American Indian Treaty Rights (ACT 31)
- PRAXIS I (PPST: Pre Professional Skills Test) - You must have passing scores for all three parts in order to be accepted into the program.
- PRAXIS II (General Science Content Exam) - You must have a passing score on the test in order to do spring student teaching - take this test early enough so you get scores back before late fall.
