OPI and WPT


Effective September 1, 2011, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) required content exam for world language teaching certification is a rating score of Intermediate High or above on both the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) and the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). This is in place of the Praxis II content exams for world languages.


The Testing Center at UW-Milwaukee will be administering the following exams:
  1. the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview - computer (OPIc) to Superior; OR
  2. the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview - computer (OPIc) to Advanced AND
  3. the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) (internet).

Registration

  1. Go to the Language Testing International (LTI) website at www.languagetesting.com and click on “Apply for an Academic Test.” Next, select “WI Applicants Only” and then “Click to Apply Online.” Read the information provided about the tests.
  2. Submit your application and payment at www.languagetesting.com (online). You will need to specify one of the test dates and times listed below to use the Testing Center. You must allow at least 10 business days between the date your request is received by ACTFL and the test date. The proctor requested should be the UWM Testing Center, 414-229-4689 with destest@uwm.edu as the proctor email.
  3. Dates are listed below and you must sign up in order attend. The ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) and OPIc (both tests administered via internet only) will be offered on the dates listed below. Please arrive 15 minutes before your confirmed test time, and allow 3 hours for check in and testing. Both tests will be administered during each session.r 2011
  4. Once your application package has been processed, you and your proctor will be sent separate emails with other instructions. 
  5. You will also need to sign up by visiting the Testing Center registration site at: testregistration.uwm.edu.  In addition to the fees for the ACTFL exams charged at www.languagetesting.com, the UWM Testing Office charges a proctoring fee of $25 for each session.  This amount, payable by check, cash, money order or credit card will be collected at the time of testing.
