Art Education (ART ED) & Music Education (MUS ED) Waiting Lists

The Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction receives and administers Closed Section Interest Form (CSIF) "waiting list" requests submitted by eligible UWM students for "CURRINS" course listings only.

  • All official e-mail communication between the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and admitted UWM students regarding Closed Section Interest Form submissions will be sent to assigned student UWM PantherLink email address.
  • So we can maintain up-to-date accurate waiting lists, please notify us in a timely manner if there is a waiting list that you no longer wish to remain on.

  • For questions or information regarding "CURRINS" Closed Section Interest Forms, contact: George Valentine (Academic Department Specialist) at 414-229-4884/4814, cni@uwm.edu, Enderis Room 399.

Dept of Curriculum and Instruction Waiting List Policy

The following information outlines the current Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction "Waiting List" policy and procedures for students looking to add into closed "CURRINS" course sections (i.e., courses that have reached expected enrollment capacities, or are closed per other department enrollment management priorities).

  • To be placed on a closed course waiting list, a CSIF request must be submitted online via PAWS. There is no paper version of the CSIF.

  • Submitted CSIFs are automatically routed via email to individual departments for processing (that is, to the department that owns/schedules that course subject area). Individual department CSIF policy may vary.

  • Because students can submit a Closed Section Interest Form (via PAWS) for a course section that is neither closed nor full (a process the department has no control over), be advised that:

CSIFs submitted to the Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction for "CURRINS" course sections that are not closed will not be accepted. These requests will be considered invalid and discarded. No additional action by the department will be taken to process or maintain these invalid requests.

  • The Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction does not accept CSIFs as a form of advance seating request. These requests will be considered invalid and discarded. No additional action by the department will be taken to process or maintain these invalid requests.

CSIFs submitted prior to assigned individual PAWS registration appointment start times (regardless of whether or not a class is closed on PAWS) will be considered invalid and discarded. No additional action by the department will be taken to process or maintain these invalid requests.

  • CSIFs submitted to the Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction for "CURRINS" course sections are accepted on a first come first served basis. Your place on a waiting list depends on the date and time that your CSIF request was received by our department.

  • CSIF waiting lists are maintained for individual specific closed course sections.

  • Enrollment levels for closed course sections are checked frequently. Waiting list students are added into closed sections as openings occur (as seats become available).

When a seat opens up in a course section we will automatically attempt to have you added to the class, per your request. We assume that you want the class because you submitted the CSIF. No follow-up attempt will be made, prior to adding you to a class, to confirm with you that you are still interested in adding a requested class. However, when we add you to a class you will receive an email notification (sent to your PantherMail address) from our office.

It is your responsibility to notify our office, in a timely manner, if you want to be removed from a specific waiting list. If we add you to a class that you are no longer want, then it is your responsibility to drop the class.

  • If our attempt to add you to a class would create a scheduling conflict with another class that you are enrolled in, then you will be offered (via email) a PAWS Permission Number (PPN) with which you can add the class yourself. Note: The PPN will only work after you drop the conflicting class. PPNs are emailed to PantherMail email addresses only.

A PPN not used by the end of the 2nd following business day after issuance (i.e., the date it was emailed to you) will be reassigned to the next student on the waiting list for that specific course section. As a result, your waiting list request will be considered void and you will be removed from that waiting list.

  • CURRINS course Instructors are provided with up-to-date waiting lists for use at their first class meetings. At the first class meeting, it is the Department's policy, and practice, that:

If students John Doe and Sally Smith are both on a course waiting list, and both students appear in person at the first class meeting, then which ever student is first on the waiting list will be offered the first available seat. If John is in front of Sally on the waiting list, then John would get the seat. If a second seat is available, then Sally would be offered that seat (and so on).

Students not on a closed course waiting list receive last in-person priority for any available seats at the first class meeting.

  • Regarding Credit Overloads: If our attempt to have you added to your requested class is prevented because the add would create a credit overload situation, then a PPN will be emailed to your PantherMail email address. However, the PPN will not work unless you drop enough credits so that adding your requested class keeps you at or below the maximum credit enrollment allowed.

Note: Overload approvals can only be requested/obtained through your School, or College, Dean's Office. The Dean's signature approval for a credit overload is required on a paper "Change of Registration (Add/Drop) Form" before you can add a class that would put you above the maximum credit enrollment allowed.

Graduate students need to obtain the Graduate School Dean's signature authorization for an overload request (Mitchell Hall Room 261).

The "Change of Registration (Add/Drop) Form" is available from the Dept. of Enrollment Services, Mellencamp Hall, Room 274.

CSIF Requests for: "CURRINS 100: Introduction to Teaching: Colloquium and Fieldwork"

Be specific when filling out your CSIF.
  • For Summer Sessions, there is usually at least one afternoon classe scheduled, some times two.

  • For Fall Semester and Spring Semester, there are usually six class sections scheduled (including one or two online sections).

  • Please Note: We do not accept CSIF requests submitted using the "any day course" or the "any evening course" menu options for CURRINS 100 course sections. CSIF requests submitted as "any" will automatically be discarded, and you will not be placed on any of the individual closed section waiting lists. You must specify each individual course section that you are interested in. The CSIF will allow you to submit up to three class numbers (or section numbers) at a time. If you want to get on the waiting list for more than three CURRINS 100 sections, then you'll need to submit the CSIF twice.

After the CSIF Submission Deadline/Cut-off Date

After the submission deadline/cut off date, if there is a closed course section that you still want to add:
  • Bring a filled out Change of Registration (Add/Drop) Form with you to the first class meeting to find out (from the instructor) if there are any available seats in that class.

  • If there is an available seat for you, the instructor will sign the Change of Registration Form which you (not the instructor) must then return to the Dept. of Enrollment Services (MEL 274).

  • Per our department waiting list policy (below): Students already on a CSIF waiting list have first priority for any available (1st day of class) seats before walk-in student requests.
