Child playing with toys. Focus Your Coursework on Child Care!The Department of Educational Policy and Community Studies currently offers an optional submajor in Child Care. T.E.A.C.H. tuition assistance is available for qualified applicants.

The submajor in Child Care offers two major areas of study:
  • Child Care Education (Teachers, Assistant Teachers and Family Child Care Providers)
Through the courses in this program you will explore:
  • Race relations
  • The history and causes of inequality
  • Community development
  • At-risk students
  • Social action and social change
  • and much more!
Courses are offered online, blended, and during the evening to better fit in the schedules of working students.

This program is a collaboration between the BS program in Community Education, the UWM Children's Center, and the Center for Early Childhood Professional Development & Leadership.


Prior Professional ExperienceSince Community Education students are adults who have been working, reading and acquiring skills equivalent to those provided in a conventional classroom setting, it is possible to earn credits good towards lower division electives by demonstration of competencies. The course, Ed Pol 100 - Community Education I, offers students the opportunity to analyze their prior learning and earn credits for their experiences. The process of awarding PPEE credits is through in- class writing that is evaluated by the departmental faculty.

Submajor Requirements
Students choose either the Child Care Educator Track, or the Child Care Administrator Track.

LOWER DIVISION COURSEWORK: 81 Credits

I. General Education Requirements (GER) 24 credits
UWM Milestones:
  • English Competency: Placement level of 4 or higher on the English Proficiency Test or complete English 102 or an equivalent course with a "C" or better.
  • Math Competency: Placement level of 30 or higher on the Math Placement Test, or complete Math 105, 106, 175, or an equivalent course with a "C" or better.
  • UWM Cultural Diversity: Complete 3 units from GER list in the current Schedule of Classes.
  • Foreign Language: Two semesters of one foreign language, or two years of one foreign language in high school.
GER Distribution: 24 credits
  • 3 credits English
  • 3 credits Fine Arts (GERA)
  • 6 credits Humanities (GERH)
  • 6 credits Social Science (GERS)
  • 6 credits Natural Science (GERN; GERL-one course must be a science lab)
II. Advanced Expository Writing: 3 credits
Choose one of the following 3 credit courses: ENG 201, 202, 205, 206, 207, 208, 214, 230.

III. Lower Division Electives: 42 credits
Choose courses from any UWM school or college; lower or upper division may be used to fill this requirement.

IV. Community Education (CED) Lower Division Core: 12 credits
  • 3 credits ED POL 111-Organizing for Social Action in Urban Communities 
  • 3 credits ED POL 112-Introduction to Community Education 
  • 3 credits ED POL 113-The Milwaukee Community 
  • 3 credits ED POL 114-Community Problems 

UPPER DIVISION COURSEWORK: 39 Credits
