Master's Application Process
Below you will find the application process for a Master's in School or Community Counseling. In addition, you will also find information on applying to the Post Master's Certification Progam in School Counseling.
Applying for a Master's Degree in School or Community Counseling
The application process consists of two parts: A) Applying to the UWM Graduate School and B) Applying to the Department of Educational Psychology.
A. To the UWM Graduate School: 1) Applicants are encouraged to complete the Graduate School Application Form online at
www.gradschool.uwm.edu. Click on "Apply for Admission" and follow the instructions.
* Note: The Graduate School recommends applying one year in advance.
2) One copy of official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate credits (if any) the applicant has accumulated to date at other institutions of higher learning must be submitted to the Graduate School. It is the applicant's responsibility to arrange for this to be done.
Admission applications cannot be processed until all official transcripts have been received by the Graduate School.
3) Finally, the Graduate School application also requires a "Statement of Reasons for Graduate Study." Applicants are urged to take special care in describing long range goals, how they see themselves fitting into UWM's program, which has an urban and multicultural emphasis, and relating experiences which influenced their decision to pursue counseling.

The following must be submitted to the Department prior to March 1st. Only one review is scheduled to take place shortly after March 1st. 1) Have 3 letters of recommendation sent to the Department of Educational Psychology by writers who can address your academic and interpersonal skills.
2) Complete a
Personal Data Form. 3) Finally, send a copy of your "Statement of Reasons for Graduate Study" to the Department of Educational Psychology. Again, applicants are urged to take special care in describing long range goals, how they see themselves fitting into UWM's program, which has an urban and multicultural emphasis, and relating experiences which influenced their decision to pursue counseling.

Applying for the Post-Master's School or Community Counseling Certification Program
1) Graduates of the UWM master's program in counseling need only submit a
Non-Degree Candidate (NDC) application form. Applicants apply to the Graduate School as non-degree candidates and are recommended for admission by the Counseling Area Chair. All other applicants who
possess a master's degree may be considered for admission to the Post-Master's School or Community Counseling Certification sequence. In order to successfully complete the certification sequence, a student must be accepted into the Post-Master's Certification Program. To be considered, applicants must have a graduate GPA of 3.0 or better. The department must receive all materials by March 1. To ensure department receipt of materials on time, be sure to submit all information (Application, Transcripts, and Reasons for Graduate Study) to the Graduate School and supporting materials (three letters of recommendation, Personal Data Form, and Career Statement if applying to the Post-Master's Certification sequence) to the Department of Educational Psychology Counseling Program
by February 1.

Graduate School as part of the admissions process:
a. Application Form for Graduate Non-Degree Admission
b. Official Transcripts if not already on file

2) In addition, applicants must submit the following to the
Counseling Post-M.S. Certification Admissions Committee in the Department of Educational Psychology as part of the admissions process for the certification program:
a. Three letters of reference which must address the applicant's academic and interpersonal skills
b. A completed
Career Statement Form c. A completed Personal Data Form
