Learning and Development Ph.D. Application Process
Below you will find the application process for the doctoral specialization in Learning and Development. The Learning and Development area has an open enrollment policy. Once an application has been received, reviewed, and approved for admission, the student can enroll in the next semester. Materials will be considered on a rolling basis as they are received from the graduate school. It takes at least 8-10 weeks from the time the graduate school receives your application until the Learning and Development program can make its admissions decisions. In addition, please note that certain materials must be received by the Graduate School, while others are sent directly to the Department of Educational Psychology. Applicants to the Ph. D. program must have a Masters degree.
The application process consists of two parts: A) Applying to the UWM Graduate School and B) Applying to the Department of Educational Psychology.
A. To the UWM Graduate School:
1) Applicants are encouraged to complete the Graduate School Application Form online at www.gradschool.uwm.edu. Click on "Apply for Admission" and follow the instructions.
* Note: The Graduate School recommends applying one year in advance.
2) One copy of official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate credits (if any) the applicant has accumulated to date at other institutions of higher learning must be submitted to the Graduate School. It is the applicant's responsibility to arrange for this to be done.
Admission applications cannot be processed until all official transcripts have been received by the Graduate School.
3) Request that an official copy of your GRE scores be sent to the Graduate School (Institution Code 1473 for the paper-based test). Scores more than five years old will not be considered. The GRE must be taken before completing the graduate school application. Score reporting options are provided at the time of testing. If you wish to obtain a copy of scores from a previous administration of the GRE, you can request scores by contacting Educational Testing Services at 1-888-GRE-SCORE.
3) Finally, the Graduate School application also requires a "Statement of Reasons for Graduate Study." Applicants are urged to take special care in describing long range goals, how they see themselves fitting into UWM's program, which has an urban and multicultural emphasis, and relating experiences which influenced their decision to pursue counseling.

2) Have letters of recommendation sent to the Department of Educational Psychology within one month of submitting an application to the graduate school. Recommendations must be forwarded directly by the writers to the Educational Psychology Doctoral Program. Please submit letters of recommendation from a minimum of three appropriate persons that can comment meaningfully and knowledgeably on the likelihood that you can successfully complete an advanced scholarly program of study for the Ph.D. degree. It is helpful if the majority of references are written by college/university faculty. At least one reference must be from an academic source. In any case, select people who can comment with confidence on your academic qualifications. Be sure references are as recent as possible, ordinarily no more than one year old.
3) Finally, send a copy of your Statement of Reasons for Graduate Study to the Department of Educational Psychology. Be sure to indicate you are applying for the
'Learning and Development' specialization. If you have not already done so (in your Statement of Reasons to the Graduate School) please articulate your research interests and goals, as well as the relation of these interests and goals to urban issues.
