Frequently Asked Questions


Below you will find a list of frequently asked questions from past prospective students regarding the Learning and Development Ph.D. program.

1) Does the program emphasize theory or practice?
The program focuses on research skills as they apply to education and training, throughout the lifespan and in a broad range of settings.

2) Can I apply on the Web?

Yes! Applicants are encouraged to complete the Graduate School Application Form online at www.gradschool.uwm.edu

3) Where are the instructions for applying to the Learning and Development Ph.D. Program?
Click on the Application Process link that can be found in the right margin. Please note that certain materials must be received by the Graduate School, while others are sent directly to the Department of Educational Psychology. Applicants to the Ph. D. program must have a Masters degree.

4) I have applied for graduate study and would like to know the status of my application. Who should I contact?

Please watch your mailbox for information on monitoring your application status online.

5) What should my letters of recommendation say?

The letters should speak to your abilities as a student and researcher, your overall goals, why you would be a good fit for the Learning and Development Ph.D., and how you might contribute to the area. Letters of recommendation are required for the Ph. D. program.

6) What should I write in my statement of purpose?
The statement should outline your academic and professional background, declaration of Area of Concentration (Learning and Development), as well as specific research interests and goals for the Ph.D. program. This statement should be submitted to both the Graduate School and the Department of Educational Psychology (see Application Process for more information) and must be complete and thorough as it provides information that is central to the admission decision. The same statement can be used for both the Graduate School's "Reasons for Graduate Study" statement and the one you send to the department.

8) I know that your department has rolling admissions, but are there deadlines I should be aware of for applying to the Graduate School?
