Admission Process for Programs

If you have a bachelor's degree and are interested in applying to a Special Education Teacher Certification Program download the post-baccalaureate application packet for program information and the admissions process. The department application is listed on pages 8-9 of the application packet and includes a complete checklist of the application requirements.

The admission process for the Undergraduate Interpreter Training Program involves meeting University requirements to obtain junior standing, completing pre-requisite course work (including American Sign Language), maintaining a 2.5 GPA, and submission of an ITP application with a personal statement.  After students have met these admission requirements, a screening interview is scheduled with the Program Coordinator.

If you already have a bachelor's degree and are applying to the Interpreter Training Program as a Post-Baccaulareate Student, you will need to complete language and admission requirements prior to beginning the Interpreter Training Program professional course work.  To begin this process, apply to UW-Milwaukee as a Post-Baccaulareate student.  After admission to UWM, you can begin completing the pre-requisite course work.  When all admission requirements have been met, there is a separate application and screening interview with the Program Coordinator to complete prior to entering the Interpreter Training Program.

If you have previous experience in ASL, you can take the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) to determine your appropriate course level and possibly receive retroactive credits. The ASLPI is offered three times a year and costs $165.
