ExEdSide American Sign Language Immersion Course

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will offer a one-week intensive course called ASL Immersion Course (AIC) in Summer 2013. This course is being offered by the American Sign Language Studies Program in collaboration with Outreach. This seven-day language immersion experience will focus on learning the visual-gestural aspect of American Sign Language. Students with a foundation in American Sign Language and a desire to advance their language skills are encouraged to register. Daily class meetings will provide complete language immersion with native and fluent ASL users and opportunities for students to improve their abilities to express visual concepts in creative ways. The classroom will be transformed into an environment that will allow for natural language acquisition and enhancement. The week will culminate with an adventurous event called “ASLmazing Race”, modeled after the popular television reality show, “Amazing Race”. This culminating project will be hosted by the students and will showcase the ASL skills learned throughout the course. Students who register for this course, can expect to: Improve fundamental ASL skills- visual gestural communication, non-manual signals, classifiers and representation of visual-spatial aspects of reality. Develop a network and connections with peers, Deaf individuals and the Deaf community to enhance future learning opportunities and create life-long relationships.
