Multicultural Studies Specialization
The ProgramMulticultural Studies is a fully interdepartmental specialization, offering a unique program of studies with an emphasis on integrating intercultural theory and practice in urban educational and community settings. Enhanced by study in anthropology, history and sociology, students gain depth and breadth in a dynamic specialization that prepares one for the unique challenges of the 21st century.

Research Design and Methodology (minimum 15 credits)
ED PSY 724 - Educational Statistical Methods II (prerequisite (ED PSY 624)
AD LDSP/CURRINS 729 - Qualitative Research and Field Studies in Education Settings

Preliminary ExaminationStudents will be required to pass a preliminary examination by demonstrating competence in urban education, research methods, the specialization and the minor area.
DissertationA dissertation will be required in an area of Multicultural Studies. This chair/major professor must be an approved doctoral advisor who is a member of the multicultural studies faculty. At least one additional committee member must be from the Multicultural Studies faculty, and one must be from the department of Anthropology, History, or Sociology.
Exit RequirementsContingent upon satisfactory completion of program requirements, passage of the preliminary qualifying examination, and successful oral defense of the dissertation, the Director of the Urban Education Doctoral Program will give final approval of the inclusion of "Urban Education: Multicultural Studies" on the student's transcript.

- Understanding the interdisciplinary literature concerning multicultural education
- Examining one's own cultural self
- Analyzing own personal and other individuals' underlying assumptions about multiculturalism
- Integrating various theoretical perspectives concerning multiculturalism
- Analyzing and applying research methodologies pertinent to studies of multiculturalism
- Examining the implications of research questions and methodologies on multiculturalism in educational settings
- Conducting collaborative inquiry with peers, faculty, and community members in multicultural settings
- Developing and conducting scholarly research that contributes knowledge to the field of multicultural studies

- At least nine credits of additional advanced level coursework (800 or above) from either a qualitative or quantitative track.
- As part of the six credits in advanced level work, three must be in the minor area and three must be in the School of Education.
- Option A: 8 or more credits in a single department outside of the School of Education.
- Option B: 6 or more credits in each of two departments, with at least one department outside of the school.
