Azara Santiago-RiveraAssociate Professor
Department of Educational Psychology


Azara Santiago-Rivera teaches courses in the areas of group counseling, counseling theory and practice, and multicultural perspectives in counseling. Her publications and research interests include multicultural competence in the counseling profession, bilingual therapy, and Latinos and depression. She has received grants including a National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences grant to study the impact of environmental contamination on the biopsychosocial well-being of the Mohawks living in northeastern New York. She has presented on these topics at major conferences, and has coauthored two books: "The Puerto Rican Diaspora: Its History and Contributions" and "Counseling Latinos and la familia," and has published in leading journals in the field.

Santiago-Rivera is past-president of the National Latina/o Psychological Association and she has held other leadership positions including vice president of the Latino Interest Network of the Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), and president of Counselors for Social Justice (CSJ) within the American Counseling Association.

She received her B.A. in psychology and M.A. in guidance and counseling from Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. She earned her Ph.D. in counseling from Wayne State University.
