John LaNearAssistant Professor
Department of Administrative Leadership
John LaNear teaches courses in School Law. His research interests include academic freedom, school and higher education law, student nondiscrimination, ethics and leadership, and higher education organization and governance. As an attorney, LaNear has worked in private civil practice and also served as an Assistant Attorney General in Missouri. Since that time, he has worked, studied, taught and researched in the area of higher education and education law. He is the regional reporter for the School Law Reporter and co-editor of the School Law and Higher Education section of Courts and CLE Bulletin.

LaNear received his B.A. in English from Southwest Missouri State University and his juris doctorate degree from the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Law, where he served as articles editor for the UMKC Law Review and was a member of the UMKC Moot Court Board. He earned his M.S. in educational administration and his Ph.D. in educational administration at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
