Scholarships
Scholarships reduce the costs of tuition and/or books for undergraduate students. We have been working to increase both the number and amounts of scholarships awarded. In the 2004-2005 school year, 44 students received scholarships averaging $1,093. In the 2007-2008 school year 132 students will receive scholarships averaging $2,477.
With undergraduate tuition alone approaching $7,000 a year, we know we have a long way to go before we can relieve the financial burden our students take on when earning their college degrees. There are several types of scholarships. Some provide funds designated for tuition and/or books only, while some provide room and board for qualified students.
Current Use Scholarships
A Current Use Scholarship is one that will be awarded to a student within an academic year. The donor will contribute to the scholarship annually and will enjoy seeing the gift being put top use immediately.
Endowed Scholarships
An Endowed Scholarship is established with the intent of continuing in perpetuity. A minimum amount of $40,000 is needed to establish an endowed scholarship, which, at the present time, will provide approximately $1,600 after one year. The principal is invested and earnings from the scholarship are used to support the scholarship.
Modified Endowed Scholarships
A Modified Endowed Scholarship blends portions of both a current use and an endowed scholarship. In this case, the donor gives a gift to the School of Education and designates that part of the gift amount will be put into an endowment, while another portion of the gift will be designated for current use.
Fellowships
A Fellowship is funding for graduate students. Like a scholarship, a fellowship helps relieve financial burdens for graduate students. We are working to establish fellowships for graduate students as a way to attract top talent to graduate programs in the School of Education. Another important need for fellowships is to help graduate students who have completed their course work concentrate on writing their dissertations. A graduate fellowship costs approximately $12,000/year.
