MLIS
- Probation & Grade Maintenance
Removal of Initial Probation
Students who have been admitted on probation
must meet the academic standards of the University
in their graduate coursework. That is, the student
must have a grade point average of no less than
3.0 ("B") upon completion of the first
12 credits in order to remain in the program.
Midterm Procedure
Instructors of SOIS graduate students whose course
performance is evaluated as less than "B"
at the midterm of a given semester shall report
this fact to the Assistant Dean. Upon receipt
of such a report, the Assistant Dean shall issue
to the student, with a copy to the advisor, a
letter stating that:
- Instructor X has reported a "less-than-a-B"
midterm evaluation in course N.
- The School hopes that the grade improves before
the end of the semester and it encourages the
student to discuss the matter with the instructor
and/or an advisor.
- According to SOIS policy the advisor is not
authorized to give written approval to next
semester's registration unless he or she judges
that the student shows evidence of academic
achievement of such quality that:
- If the student is on probation, he or
she can expect to be removed from probation
upon completion of 12 credits in the program,
or
- If the student is not on probation, he
or she can be expected to maintain a 3.0
GPA.
Semester’s End Procedure
Students discontinued from the program may appeal
in writing to the SOIS Research and Graduate Program
Committee using standard UWM grievance procedures.
(Refer to the Graduate
Student and Faculty Handbook.)
A student whose cumulative graduate grade point
average in the MLIS program falls below 3.0 at
the end of any semester is placed on probation.
If the cumulative grade point average is not raised
above 3.0 by the time nine additional credits
are earned, the student is discontinued from the
program.
