Library Media Specialist Certification
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers a complete program to attain certification from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a school library media specialist. In the state of Wisconsin, this program requires that the student has, or is eligible for, a classroom teaching license in another field before application for the Initial Library Media License (902) can be made. The MLIS degree is required when the candidate applies for the second level of the certification, the Professional 902 License, no later than 5 years after the Initial license begins.
In addition to the coursework specified under Requirements, all certification candidates will be required to maintain an ePortfolio which demonstrates their proficiency in the Content Standards for Initial Licensure (SOIS ePortfolio Guidelines). These standards are listed at DPI webpage [http://dpi.wi.gov/imt/lmslic.html] and are available from the school library media program coordinator. General ePortfolio information may also be found through the UWM School of Education. http://www4.uwm.edu/soe/cpe/e_portfolio.cfm
