In this section, you will find a guide to some of the places with which SOIS has partnerships in place. In some cases, there are regular study abroad programs. In others, students and faculty will need to be more proactive in pursuing a possible study, research or exchange possibility.
Study Abroad – an educational opportunity in which the student receives credit for time spent abroad. This is usually in collaboration with a partner university. SOIS has several programs with the Center for Educational Opportunities (CIE) and other schools within UWM. For information on study abroad opportunities at UWM, please visit CIE’s website: http://www4.uwm.edu/cie/
Student or Faculty Exchange – a program in which a student or faculty member chooses to live in a foreign country and study at a partner institution. An exchange, as opposed to study abroad, is usually organized within the school/department rather than at the university level. In some cases credit is given, but this must be approved by both institutions. Exchanges do not have to be one-to-one, or a swap of students.
Research Collaboration – usually an understanding (often expressed by a Memoranda of Understanding, or MOU) between two schools or universities to accommodate joint research projects. In these cases, faculty members between schools will often have opportunities to visit and co-author papers. Students may also pursue research opportunities with these schools, which can often provide funding for exemplary research proposals.
