It’s not just banned books that librarians are dealing with today – it’s Internet filters, invasions of privacy and Internet censorship. That’s the view of Barbara Jones, director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. Jones is scheduled to speak at the Milwaukee Public Library’s Centennial Hall, 733 N. Eighth St., on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m.

In a recent book release titled Fairy Tales with a Black Consciousness: Essays on Adaptations of Familiar Stories, Associate Professor Laretta Henderson as well as co-authors and editors Vivian Yenika-Agbaw (Penn State) and Ruth McKowy Lowrey (University of Florida Gainesville) discuss Black cultural retellings of traditional European fairy tales.

SOIS and the Wisconsin Center for the Book are collaborating in an opportunity for up to 20 students to experience the National Book Festival, sponsored by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. The focus of the experience will be attendance at the National Book Festival (Sept. 21-22) on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Shana Ponelis has been appointed Assistant Professor in the School of Information Studies (SOIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) where she is teaching and expanding research she began while earning a PhD in information technology from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
