PhD in Information Studies

The PhD program at SOIS is a unique, research-oriented degree that provides an opportunity for students to develop, apply, and critically evaluate the relevance of theory and the effectiveness of its application to a variety of research areas. Doctoral students examine the evolving landscape of information production, storage, dissemination, and use in order to introduce new ideas for social, commercial and educational contexts.

Concentrations

Begun in 2008, the PhD program at SOIS has developed a reputation for successful scholarship in three concentrations:

  • Information Organization
  • Information Policy
  • Information Retrieval

Building on one of the largest and most dynamic MLIS programs in the country, the program prepares researchers, academics and administrators for successful careers in these three areas. Ranked among the top ten information studies programs in the US for its research productivity, SOIS and its spirited faculty are building a learning environment where information science theory is rigorously studied and questioned.

Our Students

In its PhD students, SOIS seeks creative, energetic, hard-working intellectually courious individuals who can demonstrate the analytical skills and initiative which distinguish an earnest academic career. PhD students are expected to practice advanced research methods, produce menaingful scholarship that cntributes to the konwledge base of the field, teach, serve as advocates and become experts in their field.

B2A: Barriers to Information Access 2011-2012 Fellowship Program

SOIS is committed to creating a diverse and active PhD program. Diversity is considerd in all its forms: race/ethnicity, physical challenge, gender/orientation minorities, etc. For the 2011-12 academic year, SOIS will be accepting applications for the IMLS-funded Barriers to Access (B2A) program, designed to better understand and eliminate barriers to information access.
