SSC Student Staff

DSC_5288_1

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Success Center student staff are a prestigious group of students who are called upon for their leadership and contributions to the life and culture of the University. We participate in a variety of campus activities, initiatives, and mentoring designed to enhance the experience of all new students, help achieve the University’s goals, and further promote its schools, colleges and other campus units. The 2013-2014 staff has been a dynamic group of individuals who helped welcome about 5,000 new students and their families to the UWM community.

What We Do

  • Connect new students to UWM during Orientation programs.
  • Provide positive mentoring to new students throughout the academic year.
  • Contribute a sense of UWM community, pride, spirit and tradition.
  • Provide student perspective and leadership in shaping UWM campus initiatives.
  • Represent the best of UWM at on and off-campus UWM sponsored activities and functions.

Peer Mentors focus on providing continuous mentoring and programming to engage all students. Students who engage with the academic and social aspects of college are much more successful and satisfied with their college experience than those who do not. An effective way to help students engage is through mentoring and supportive activities. UWM is committed to providing active mentoring to all of its students throughout their entire college experience. You'll receive emails from your Peer Mentor inviting you to campus events, informing you of campus opportunities and connecting you to other students.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would be King Arthur because I have always been fascinated with the Middle Ages and King Arthur was a beast.

Clubs/Organizations/Activities that you’re involved with on campus: I have participated and volunteered in many activities for different departments/offices throughout Campus. Ranging from Black Student Union’s, “Guaranteed 4.0 Seminar”, and the musical performance of “Ragtime” -to the Student Success Center Halloween event, “who killed TIM-E”. Also I am an active volunteer for the service department on campus, which is named Center for Community Based Learning, Leadership and Research (CCBLLR), where I participate in the Student Retreat held in Camp Minikani.
If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I am not sure if this is answering the question or not-but I would like to be a collection of individuals spanning from around the world. The people I would like to be does not necessarily have to be famous, I would merely like to gain life experience while immersing myself in different cultures/understandings, so I may better reflect upon the world, along with better appreciating the like I was blessed to have.
Hidden talents? I am not yet aware of my hidden talent(s), though I do believe every person has one. I do believe that I can feel other people emotions.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: To always adventure into every aspect of school with an open mind to learn and find out more about oneself. College is an intuition for higher education and with that being said you will learn more about yourself than ever before. So be prepared and dedicated by being perceptive in the fact that you are the Author of your future and the Director of your beginning.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? In fact, I believe that for any individual, it is the best to be yourself and not to dream of being someone else. Each person has his own characteristic that makes him special. The combination of skills and attitudes is what makes a person’s characteristic.
Hidden talents? Leadership strategies, Project management, and I do love to spend some of my free time cocking.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: College is not only a place to get a degree, but it is an opportunity to learn more about yourself and to start planning for your career after graduation. Your future career as an employee starts from the first day in college. The more you develop your skills in college, the higher chances you have to work in the position you always dreamed about. Look at all students who are involved in organizations, and students who have jobs in campus, you have the ability to be like them. You only need to think of your future as they do. Start setting your future goals and make an advantage of college years to gain the experience you need to achieve your goals.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? There are many people that I look up to but if I had to choose to be any of them it would have to be John Green. He is funny, intelligent and real. Mr. Green is very into making sure the world is a better place. For instance, he and his followers ‘the Nerdfighters’ once raised thousands of dollars to help fight poverty. Not only that, but John Green is a brilliant writer as well. As a writer myself, one day I hope that I could be as an inspiring of writer as he is. So if I had to choose to be anyone, it would definitely have to be Mr. John Green. No questions asked.

I admire him and would choose to be him because the science that he explored and helped advance he did purely for the sake of science and not for monetary gains.
Hidden talents? Longboarding, painting, and my vocabulary.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Take a deep breath and release any worries or fears you have coming into college. It is a brand new start, new people, new school, and new environment. You can become whoever you want to be and not be held back by anything prior to getting here. Go out and experience all that college can be, the city, the classes you never thought you would take, people you have never been exposed to, and the vast variety of different foods! Use your first year to experience new things and find your niche. Be bold and explorative, who knows? Maybe you will end up majoring in something you never would have imagined!

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Not going to lie, this is going to sound super cheesy; but I wouldn't really want to be anyone else than who I am. Yes I've gone through some rough patches, but who hasn't; even the most famous figures out there have gone through rough patches. Life in general isn't perfect, but I would want to be myself in everything I do.
Hidden talents? I don't think a lot of people know that I love to bake, I used to have a lot more free time and after I would be done with my homework I would like to make cakes and pies and desserts in general.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM:My best advice to first-year students is to get to know new people, get involved, but only to do what they can handle. I do believe it's important for students to get to know some classmates of theirs because it makes school that much easier. My first year I wasn't too involved with people on campus because I commuted, but now that I'm involved and with an on campus job, I feel more welcomed.

Clubs/Organizations/Activities that you’re involved with on campus: Treasurer of the Geology Club, undergraduate research assistant studying geomagnetism and planetary geology.
If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure I would be Neil DeGrasse Tyson. First of all, the guy wears the coolest ties. And second of all it’s one of my dreams to be a prominent science advocate in the community. The world needs more people that can attract individuals to the STEM fields using relatability and wit. There’s a misconception that science is a gray world full of sternness and lack of individuality and that’s just not the case. I want to show people that.
Hidden talents? I am a grillmaster; there’s absolutely no cut of steak I can’t throw over a fire and turn into pure perfection and no beer brat I can’t ascend to the level of divinity. I am unbeatable at Mario Kart Wii. And I’m also a hip-hop producer for a local positive rap group and have been known to lay down the funk.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Relax! Breathe! The quickest way to set yourself up for a bad first year experience is to let anxiety get the best of you. Keep calm, immerse yourself in the campus, and approach your new environment with a positive attitude. I guarantee that you’ll have a great experience here if you do so.

Hidden talents? I don’t think I’m good at writing, but lots of people have told me different so I suppose that’s my hidden talent.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Finding out how to balance your time is so important! You’re life will get so much easier if you find a balance between school-work and social-time. The key is to not over do it!

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? One of my favorite writers is Joan Didion, and I wish that I had her talent for writing so powerfully in such a succinct manner. Talk about an economy of language.
Hidden talents? I like to draw, write, and play the guitar, though I guess those aren't really "hidden" talents. I am also an excellent dancer … as long as no one else is around. It's a very unique style of dance. Very difficult to understand.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Get involved in any and every way you can, whether it's through clubs, student organizations, or getting an on-campus job. I know that it's hard to find the time, but it's so worth it in terms of feeling part of a bigger community here at UWM, which helps you feel supported when things start to get hectic (which they most certainly will). Oh, also, USE A CALENDAR. Or even multiple calendars. Please. Just do it.

Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Best advice would be to keep track of when things are either due or when you have quizzes or exams coming up. Knowing this will keep you organized and less stressed because if you have it written down on a calendar, you wont forget to study for it and wont have to study at the last minute. Also to keep a schedule of times when you are either going to study for that course or to do homework because this will keep you more organized and less stressed for when exams come up.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure, I would choose to be Steve Jobs, the CEO and Co founder of Apple Inc. Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Well, since I was a first year student myself Last year, I know all of the feelings that you as a freshman are going through right now. I remember feeling alone and not knowing if I would make any friends, and of coarse you’re worried about college, Will I be able to do the homework and earn good grades? Those were some of the questions that ran through my head. But the advice that I would tell first year students is to get out of your comfort zone and get out their and meet as many people that you can! Don’t stay in your suites! Attend some of the Fall Welcome Events! These events were planned for people like you, to be able to interact with your peers! Everybody is going through the same experience that you are so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people. What got me through my first year were all of the friends that I had made. For me, my friends were my support group. Of coarse my friends weren’t the only people who helped me along the way. The P.A.S.S. program helped me tremendously with my Math class, P.A.S.S. is a free tutoring program available, located in the East Wing. So overall, get out! Meet new people! And utilize the many programs that are available to you!

He was not only an influential figure, but he is also a revolutionary figure. I think the generations of young people today should idolize Steve Job’s work ethic. Most people today sometimes expect good things to come to them and fall into your lap, but Steve went out every day in search of making his life or someone else’s better. He not only built a multi-billion dollar company from the ground up, he also had a persistent way of talking to people and getting what he wanted. Also, his dedication to obtaining perfection in everything that Apple, Inc. does is nothing short of remarkable to achieve.
Hidden talents? I can beat a majority of people in Call of Duty 1v1 quick scoping, I’m a great artist, I’m good at memorizing a song’s artist and lyrics, I can DJ music, and I’m a talented fisherman.

Hidden talents? I’ll probably beat you at a burping contest but that’s all I’ve got.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: The best advice I can give is to keep an open mind to anything and everything. There will be difference of opinions and personality clashes in most situations but the key to understanding and being able to work with anyone is being able to see where they are coming from and an open mind is very important when it comes to other’s views.

Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: “You get out of college what you put into it”, Get involved in anything and everything that sounds interesting to you to find out what you really like. My other advice would be that “it is never too early”, don’t think that just because you are a freshman you have to wait to get involved or wait to join something or wait to get a job because that is not true! The earlier you start at something, the better.

I have previous affiliation with the Student Association on campus, along with other student run governmental bodies. I’ve been involved in many intramural sports & recreation leagues, perfecting the left handed layup. I spend a considerable amount of time enjoying the numerous available outdoor options at the Urban Ecology Center. There are many student involvement opportunities here at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. I even dabble on my Roland Synthesizer at an Electronic Dance Music student run organization. A constant yearning for Pizza Shuttle slices, and games of Milwaukee Bucks and Panthers Basketball!
Clubs/Organizations/Activities that you’re involved with on campus: I’m traveling back in time; you unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... Daniel Burnham’s office he’s working on the Master Plan for Washington DC’s National Mall. Cities are beautiful living breathing organisms; I have an appreciation for DC and the ideals it represents.

Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Don’t remain anonymous on campus; begin your campus year with strong involvement. Use all of UWM’s many resources for success; you want to succeed, your friends and family want to see you succeed, as well as your instructors. Also, be reasonable set goals, achieve goals and revise new ones. Go Panthers!

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Albert Einstein-The man was a genius way ahead of his time. His work and theories have changed the world, and as technology improves, we continue to find out that more of his ideas are true every day. It would be incredible to see life and the universe as he did, ponder everything and change the course of humanity forever. If I could accomplish one thing in my life that changes the world my life would be worthwhile, Einstein did this on a weekly basis.
Hidden talents? Piano, Longboarding, Video Games, Spike Ball, Beach Volleyball
Best advice you could give a first-year student UWM: This might sound a little cliché, but honestly the two biggest things are going to class and getting involved. Just by being present in class, information is taken in sub-consciously whether the student is paying attention and taking notes or not. Many professors tend to take attendance or give out information about tests or quizzes solely in class, and not put that information online to cater to those not going to class. On top of putting in the time in class, getting involved in the university outside of class can be equally as important to work in class. The friends, connections and sense of involvement I gained from joining organizations and attending events on campus has greatly improved my campus life and directly attribute to my success at UWM. Lastly, one of the hardest things as a first-year student is finding a way to balance classes with all these new activities and opportunities that college has to offer. This time-management skill is different for everyone and finding the way that works for you is one of the most important steps to becoming successful as a college student.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would be Emma Watson because not only is she talented and beautiful, but she also has brains to back it up. It’s one thing to be a talented actress and it’s another to go beyond and above to get an education. Even though she was already rich and technically did not need to go to college to be successful, she still chose to enrich her life by attending and graduating from Brown University.
Hidden talents? Reciting the ABC’s backwards, cooking, photography, decorating, and writing.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Branch out and don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you ever get stuck in a rut, do not hesitate to ask someone for advice. Chances are, there is a resource on campus that will fulfill any need.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure, I would be Jennifer Lawrence. I think she’s such a well-rounded person, and I admire that she isn’t afraid to be herself in a society that can be so demanding. She’s beautiful, intelligent, strong, and funny!
Hidden talents? A hidden talent that I have is my creativity. I love doing DIY arts and crafts! I love being creative by adding spunk to things that I find dull. I like turning old things into new ones. A lot of the things I create are made out of things I already have! I also enjoy singing and playing the ukulele (although I'm not very good...)
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My best advice for first-year students here at UWM is to be yourself! Our differences are what make UWM such a unique school! It is so inspiring to meet new people and see things from multiple perspectives. I also recommend students to go out and explore the hidden gems of Milwaukee.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure, I would be Pino Forastiere (Musician and composer) because he displays a true passion for exploration of abstract musical thoughts while also presenting himself in a masterful and technically advanced style.
Hidden talents? I used to do card and magic tricks when I was younger. I am still able to do them to a degree. I also used to be a part of Dnipro Ukrainian Dance Ensemble (DUDE) and danced for years in traditional Ukrainian dances. We danced all over Wisconsin, including Steven’s Point, and Holiday Folk Fair.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Take full advantage of all the opportunities that UWM provides. The more you take advantage of them, the more you can create your own fantastic experience here. This means trying to get involved in a club, speaking to strangers, or simply attending events. You never know whom you may meet! In this way, not only will you connect socially, but you will also be better fit to academically succeed and be better at problem solving and making important life decisions.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would love to be Angelina Jolie because she is such a BOSS. She is widely known as a gorgeous actress with tattoos and the wife of Brad Pitt but outside of the spotlight is who I really admire. She is a volunteer, mother, and feminist. I aspire to become a strong female leader like her.
Hidden talents? I can make bird noises.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Join a student organization! I joined Asian Student Union during my First-year and my involvement lead to my success in and outside of class. Before I joined ASU, I felt like I didn’t belong because my roommates excluded me and I was too shy to make friends in classes. When I joined ASU I met a lot of great people who have become some of my closest friends today. I began attending events on campus with ASU and even helped ASU hold their annual Cultural Entertainment Night. The Vice President gave me a recommendation for working at the Student Success Center and Cultural Entertainment Night gave me something to write about for my application to the Nursing program.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure it would be Kevin Smith. Some of you may be thinking, “but why?” Kevin Smith is a walking example of what I want to become in life. He is an incredibly talented Filmmaker as well as comedian. Smith also has been featured writing comic books on different superheroes throughout the years. He even has his own show on AMC about running a comic book store with his buddies. Kevin Smith gets to act, write, and direct, and he does it all with a bang. Plus, who wouldn’t want to be on a personal level with the man who gets to dress up as Batman, Ben Affleck.
Hidden talents? I fight crime on the weekends. Don’t believe me? Just ask.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: The best advice I could give a first-year student at UWM is to just be yourself. College is really about discovering yourself, learning and exploring the unknown. So make an effort to break out of your comfort zone. Talk to someone you don’t know, volunteer on campus, go to that campus event, and join that club you’ve always that was interesting. The students that participate and engage within UWM are the students most likely to succeed.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I’m not sure if I would want to be anyone else. I am already outgoing and have a ton of energy. I enjoy meeting new people. But I love to go on adventures and try new things. I mean, if I could sing like Carrie Underwood and was funny as Betty White that would be awesome! Who doesn’t like Betty White? She’s hilarious and Carrie Underwood has a wonderful voice.
Hidden talents? I love to organize things. It may sound funny but I like to go through my closet and tidy up.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Time management is key. You can have fun but study too. Also, if you have a planner use it! I learned this through AVID and it helped me a ton!!! A planner is a real lifesaver when projects, papers and tests are due around the same time. It will help you to stay on track and keep you organized. Trust me. It works.

Hidden Talents? I don’t really think I have any hidden talents. However, I am a fast reader and can finish reading a book fairly quickly which has been useful in school.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My advice to new students would consist of three things. First, I would tell them not to be afraid of joining clubs and organizations since it is a great way to meet new people and possibly discover a new passion. Second, I would tell them to establish study habits early, create study groups, and take advantage of faculty office hours. Ultimately, I would tell them to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to try new things on campus and around the community.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would want to be Albert Einstein. Better known for his scientific accomplishments, he also thought deeply about everything else, and had a great sense of humor, too. I admire how he influenced the world with E=mc squared, but also through a call for recognition of our shared humanity. My favorite Einstein quote right now is: "You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat."
Hidden talents? I rock climb, and can do 10 pullups
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: While it's intimidating to be in this new place for four years, think of it as a place where you will grow, be challenged, and make amazing friends. This is a place where how much effort you put in directly effects how much you get out of this experience. Make these years count. This campus has so many clubs, organizations, and opportunities that there will always be one that's perfect for you. Go, explore, and get your feet wet in something new. You won't be disappointed.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Jimmy Fallon, because I think that he is the funniest person on TV, and I look up to him as a role model. I can do impressions of some celebrities. The work that I am doing in my theatre class is inspiring me to become just like him. Another reason is that he helped me get through my first semester here at UWM because I would get so worried before an exam that my way of calming myself down was a Grind hot chocolate and his videos that I subscribe to on YouTube he would make me laugh and then I would be relaxed and ready for the test. One day I want to make people laugh just like he does on his show.
Hidden talents? I can do some impressions of famous people, plus you can name me any sports team (NFL, NBA, or MLB) can I can most likely name the stadium that the team plays in.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: If you are the kind of person that gets really anxious and worried before an exam, I would say find a way that is unique to you to calm yourself down before the test, like listen to music, or watch your favorite TV show online. In addition to studying well, doing your homework and seeing your professors during office hours, seeing a tutor will help achieve the grades you want. I did all of those and I am very happy with my results and the relationships I formed with my professors during my first year. Some of those relationships helped me get an internship at a News/Talk 1130 WISN.

Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Don’t be afraid to reach out. It does require you to go out of your way, but if you do it, you will soon see how awesome it truly is to be involved here on campus. *whispers: It’s also good for your resume.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would be Mother Teresa because I admire the way she devoted her life to serving others and believed that her contribution, seemingly as small as one drop in the ocean, could make a difference in the world.
Hidden talents? I have a pretty high tolerance for peppers and hot sauce.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Find ways to get involved in the community and set academic goals: join an organization, meet new people and prioritize your time well. Also, check D2L and your school email regularly and use a planner to organize your schedule and assignments. The first year of college is a big change; look forward to all of the opportunities that will come your way!
