Ambassadors & Mentors

The  University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Campus Ambassadors (CAs) are a  prestigious group of students who are called upon for  their leadership and contributions to the life and culture of the  University. CAs participate in a variety of campus activities,  initiatives, and mentoring designed to enhance the experience of new  students, help achieve the University’s goals, and further promote its  schools, colleges and other campus units.

The  2011-2012 Campus Ambassadors have been a dynamic group of individuals  who helped welcome about 4,000 new students and their families to the UWM community. In the 2012-2013 school year, a whole new group of student  leaders will serve as part of the Campus Ambassador team. You could be part of the team!

What Campus Ambassadors do

  • Connect new first year students to UWM during New Student Orientation programs
  • Provide positive mentoring to new first year students throughout the academic year
  • Develop a sense of UWM community and pride and contribute to campus spirit
  • Provide student perspective and leadership in shaping UWM campus initiatives
  • Represent the best of UWM at on and off-campus UWM sponsored activities and functions

There are three main components to the Campus Ambassador  program. One is welcoming and acclimating freshmen students to the campus during Orientation programs as an Orientation Leader. While at Orientation, these student leaders will lead small group discussions, assist students with the PAWS registration system, and help them find classroom locations. Orientation Leaders will also welcome the parents of new students and  inform them about student life at UWM. Through a variety of experiences and opportunities, Orientation Leaders have the power to make a positive and lasting difference in the UWM community and develop great leadership and résumé-building skills in the process.

The other components to the Campus Ambassador program extend  beyond the summer to the following academic year. Both the First Year Mentors and the Student Success Advocates focus on providing continuous mentoring and programming to engage all students. Students who engage with the academic and social aspects of college are much more successful  and satisfied with their college experience than those who do not. An effective way to help students engage is through mentoring and  supportive activities. UWM is committed to providing active mentoring to  all of its students throughout their entire college experience. As a First Year Mentor or Student Success Advocate, you will be an integral part of the mentoring process at UWM. You will work with your students  and the SSC staff to accomplish goals set by UWM to help build a better campus community and create lasting relationships between students and the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure I would want to be Rosa Parks. She has not only stood up for her rights, but she did it so that we minorities could have an equal chance also. She is a very awesome influential leader from back before my time.
Hidden Talents? I love to write poetry, anything I see or do in my head. I’m creating all kinds of metaphors and phrases to come up with things.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: The best advice I could give a first year student is to not get easily influenced by your surroundings or the stories they hear before coming here. I would tell them not to get involved in parties but more or less get involved in the school. I would tell them volunteering does not help. I would also tell them if they feel as if the classes they are taking are too easy or difficult, that they should get a tutor and they can do that in the FYC where they can run into me!
