| Iesha E. Barbee Email: iebarbee@uwm.edu Majors/Minors/Certificates: Psychology Major; Social Work Minor Hometown: Milwaukee, WI Year in School: Junior Clubs/Organizations/Activities you’re involved in on campus: AOC Student If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure I would want to be Rosa Parks. She has not only stood up for her rights, but she did it so that we minorities could have an equal chance also. She is a very awesome influential leader from back before my time. Hidden Talents? I love to write poetry, anything I see or do in my head. I’m creating all kinds of metaphors and phrases to come up with things. Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: The best advice I could give a first year student is to not get easily influenced by your surroundings or the stories they hear before coming here. I would tell them not to get involved in parties but more or less get involved in the school. I would tell them volunteering does not help. I would also tell them if they feel as if the classes they are taking are too easy or difficult, that they should get a tutor and they can do that in the FYC where they can run into me! |

And the reason for this is because she was just the average citizen that walked into a fairy tale life; she is living proof that you can really become a princess. But what I admire most about her is that she doesn’t let the title of being a princess go to her head. With her new found title she works to help others, and to give back to her country. Hidden Talents? My hidden talent would have to be that I can play the main part of Fur Elise by Beethoven on the piano without any sheet music in front of me. They take down all the horrible criminals in their city. They fight for justice and although their acts are illegal, they have some members of the police force and FBI on their side. This shows you just how bad the guys they take down really are. They are just normal brothers and look out for each other no matter what, which is how I am about my siblings. Also, they are fluent in many languages and are just awesome in general. Hidden Talents? None Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Have fun, but always keep your goals in mind. I don’t want to be any famous figure, really. But if I have to pick, I would be the female equivalent of Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the first African American cardiologist. I would love to perform surgeries on kitchen tables, just kidding! He founded his own hospital and training school association for doctors and nurses of all races, with the aim of serving the whole community. Similar to the passion he put towards his career, I want my career to demonstrate the commitment I have to my community and the world I live in. Hidden Talents? Teaching and helping others Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Work hard and play hard, but don’t mix the two together. And make sure to sleep! |

Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My advice is that your first year as a college student is the foundation for the next four years. You shouldn't set your goals too high, but instead should relax and try to make new friends and make connections with your professors. Also, joining organizations early is great because you will meet other students who are probably taking or have already taken your courses. Lastly, take advantage of the tutoring through PASS. | Stevan Stojanovic Majors/Minors/Certificates: Journalism, Advertising and Media Studies (JAMS) Hometown: Brookfield, WI Year in School: Sophomore Clubs/Organizations/Activities you’re involved in on campus: First Year Honor Society (Alpha Lambda Delta), School of Letters and Science’s Deans List (Fall 2012). If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Jimmy Fallon, because I think that he is the funniest person on TV, and I look up to him as a role model. I can do impressions of some celebrities. The work that I am doing in my theatre class is inspiring me to become just like him. Another reason is that he helped me get through my first semester here at UWM because I would get so worried before an exam that my way of calming myself down was a Grind hot chocolate and his videos that I subscribe to on YouTube he would make me laugh and then I would be relaxed and ready for the test. One day I want to make people laugh just like he does on his show. Hidden Talents? I can do some impressions of people on TV, plus you can name me any sports team (NFL, NBA, or MLB) can I can most likely name the stadium that the team plays in. Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: If you are the kind of person that gets really anxious and worried before an exam, I would say find a way that is unique to you to calm yourself down before the test, like listen to music, or watch your favorite TV show online. In addition to studying well, doing your homework and seeing your professors during office hours, seeing a tutor will help achieve the grades you want. I did all of those and I am very happy with my results and the relationships I formed with my professors during my first year. |
|

I would want to be Khloe Kardashian because she is not only real and expresses how she truly feels but she is also really smart and uses that to help others by giving back to the community and speaks out about important issues to help enlighten the public on ways to fix them. I believe that she as an important model for using the talent and the brains she has been given in giving back to the community. Hidden Talents? A hidden talent that I have and not very many people know this is that I can pop my hip out of place. It sounds like it hurts to people, but it really does not hurt. If I could be any famous figure I would need to choose Ringo Starr, the drummer of the Beatles. Though he is a lesser known Beatle he is a great musician and a nice guy (I have never personally met him, but I have heard he is!). He is now the leader of his own band, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. So the leader aspect is a great thing too. Fun fact: Ringo Starr and I have the same birthday! Hidden Talents? I don’t really have any hidden talents….my not so hidden talent would probably be my water skiing skills. Since I am a part of a show ski team as well as a competitive team, I have a plethora of abilities. My proudest talent in water skiing is my ability to do a heli (a 360) off the top of the jump. Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My biggest advice to students would be to stay involved. You need to find balance in school. You can’t be all about studies and you can’t be all about socializing. Finding that balance will keep your stress down, your grades up, and ultimately cause you to have a great college experience. |

Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: The best advice I can give to a new student is to get to know your professors. When you participate in class and let the professors know that you are serious about your work, they will be more apt to work with you and help you when needed. Also, HAVE FUN! It’s important that you find a way to be part of our community because that makes it’s so much more fun. |
