Take care of your physical and mental health  

Many times at the root of academic problems are basic health and wellness.  If you are sick, you cannot go to class.  You don’t want to get behind on course content and homework or you will spend the semester trying to catch up.  Taking care of a few basics can help you be successful in the classroom too. 

• Get your Z’s.  It’s the most basic and an easy one to forget, SLEEP.  If you follow the basics of prep, practice, and participate you can avoid those infamous all-nighters that generally are not good for your health or your grades.

• Break a sweat.  The Department of Recreational Sports and facilities is committed to wellness and offers the UWM community a wide variety of recreational facilities, services, and programs.  All students receive a free membership to the Klotsche Center [http://www4.uwm.edu/recsports/], use it.  You can run on the indoor track, swim, take a group fitness class, join an intramural sport [http://www4.uwm.edu/intramurals/] or use their weight room or cardio equipment.  You can also get off-campus and participate in outdoor adventure recreation through the Adventure Center [adventurecenter.uwm.edu].  This program offers programs and activities in areas like camping, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, skiing/snowboarding, whitewater rafting, and more!

• Eat right.  Mom or Dad won’t be around reminding you to take your vitamins or eat right so you will have to do it on your own now.  If you are having troubles finding the right balance and need some advice UWM has a registered dietician [http://www4.uwm.edu/recsports/nutrition.cfm].  To schedule an appointment, call the Fitness Center at 414-229-0533.

• Seek professional help when you need it.  UWM’s Norris Health Center [http://www4.uwm.edu/norris/] offers a medical clinic, counseling, pharmacy, laboratory, and sports medicine.  If you have gotten to the point where you feel stressed, overwhelmed, or you just need someone to talk to the Norris Health Center counseling services [https://www4.uwm.edu/norris/mental_health/index.cfm] are available to you.  Almost all services at Norris Health Center are free to students who pay segregated fees. 

• Connect with a Peer Health Advocate [https://www4.uwm.edu/norris/health_services/nhc_about_peers.cfm].  Peer Health Advocates are UWM students with special training and knowledge to help educate you about basic health issues and concerns.
