UWM’s Student Support Services Program’s (SSS) Summer Bridge provides academic preparation for new freshmen admitted to SSS who will benefit most from improvement in their math, reading and/or writing skills. Some students will also participate in a career exploration course designed to familiarize them with major and career options, relevant resources and career planning. Bridge also provides an opportunity to get to know other new freshmen and become familiar with the UWM campus and its resources.
Bridge students only take those courses needed to improve math, reading and/or writing skills prior to beginning their fall coursework. These courses, as well as the career exploration course, meet for one hour each day, Monday-Friday, for four weeks from July 20-August 14. Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon (12-1:30) bridge students also attend Community Sessions designed to expose students to a variety of UWM resources. There is no fee for the SSS bridge program and it does not carry University credit. On the afternoon of the last day of bridge students having taken English and/or math during bridge will retake UWM’s placement tests. Those testing into higher level courses than those into which they had originally placed will begin with the higher level course in fall.
