September 15th, 2007 - UWM defeats Indiana University 25-12
We would like to extend our warm regards to Indiana University for providing us an additional match while they were in town this weekend. The Coaches and Athletes of the Red Storm Rugby Program proved themselves to be dignified and consummate professionals this weekend. We thank them for the opportunity to play, and wish them luck in the remainder of their season.
UW-Milwaukee kicked to Indiana University to open the match. As the Panther defense closed in on Indiana, UWM was able to regain possession on Indiana's second-phase ball with a poach from Meghan "Jr." Hausman at the breakdown. UWM took the ball to the blind side, but had the play called back to a scrummage for IU's knock-on. UWM won the hook and was immediately penalized for obstruction. Indiana put the penalty kick into touch to gain territory, but UWM's Caila Ney stole the throw in. Caila tapped the ball back to hooker Theresa Trott for the blind side take, and UWM was on the move up field and deep in Indiana Territory. WIth support runners and controlled phase play in the forwards, UWM ended their drive with a try at 2:02 by lock Lara Yuhas. The conversion attempt by Lindsey Fickau at 2:10 landed just left of the upright, and the UWM lead stayed at 5-0.
The restart kick from Indiana sailed right into the hands of scrumhalf Brittany Houston who put a beautiful box-kick just over the head of the Indiana fullback Amy Staggs. As the IU fullback recovered the ball the Panther No. 8, Kati McCormick closed in for the tackle. The Panther defense swarmed the ball and recovered possession. The Panther forwards marched the ball up field with controlled phases, and the scrumhalf sent the ball wide to flyhalf Lindsey Fickau. Lindsey drew the defense and passed out to inside center Jessica Winkowski. Jessica drew two IU defenders and skipped the ball out to blind wing Bri Jones who moved the ball to the Indiana 5 meter line. Brittany Houston picked the ball from the base of the ruck and went blind. As she reached out over the goal line and touched down at 3:05, the referee blew the whistle and brought the try back to the 5 meter line on a held-up-in-goal call. The Panther scrummage drove to into in-goal, and was again brought back for ball held-up-in-goal. The third time was a charm as Flanker Caila Ney touched down at 3:45 to put the Panther lead at 10-0. Lindsey Fickau's conversion attempt again fell just short of the left upright, and the Panther lead stayed at 10.
Indiana again put the restart in the hands of Brittany Houston, who again put the ball over the fullback on a box kick. This time the IU fullback was able to return the kick, but it was fielded by Lindsey Fickau. Lindsey took the ball into the clear and put a pressure kick back on Indiana, who had no choice but to chip the ball into touch. UWM secured the ball at their lineout and moved up field on a driving maul. Unfortunately as this is the first time UWM has used a driving maul in game a game situation, the two rear drivers in the maul collapsed off while in possession of the ball. Still able to salvage the situation, lock Meghan Hausman picked the ball from the post and took five Indiana defenders with her as she crossed the goal line and touched down for a try at 6:25. Lindsey Fickau's conversion again failed to find it's mark, and the Panther lead stayed at 15-0.
The ensuing Indiana restart hit the referee in the face (no, we're not making this up). Instead of bringing the ball back to a scrum-50 with Indiana putting in, the referee had IU re-kick. The kick went just over the hands of lock Lara Yuhas who then gathered the ball and took it up field Unfortunately Lara lost the ball forward in the tackle, and Indiana regained possession and began to establish a bit of rhythm against the uncontrolled panther defense. Indiana kept the ball for four phases until freshman Cori Jensen regained control of the ball and took it up field As the Panther forwards realigned and secured possession, Brittany Houston took the ball blind, and looked to put on a box kick that was charged down by an Indiana defender. Loose head prop Katy Martello gathered the ball and took it into contact to regain possession As her support gathered she took the ball into a long-body post and the forwards created stable platform. Brittany Houston placed a nice cross-kick in front of the Panther backline. As open wing Lia Arntsen raced for the ball, Indiana wing Carli Johnston gathered the ball and headed up field. UWM had over committed to the cross-kick and Carli took the ball 60 meters to touch down at 9:28. Carli's conversion attempt at 10:05 sailed right between the uprights and she was able to cut the Panther lead to 15-7.
The Panther restart kick cleared the Indiana second line, and created time for the UWM defense to cover ground. The Indiana ball carrier was absorbed by Kati McCormick, but Indiana still managed to retain possession. Indiana put the ball over the head of fullback Jenny Welch, but she managed to gather the ball and head up field into contact. Indiana and UWM then traded possession until Brittany Houston stripped the ball from an Indiana ball carrier and offloaded to Kati McCormick along the touch line. Two indiana defenders took Kati into touch and Indiana won the ensuing lineout. The Panthers pressure defense forced a knock-on by the Indiana backline, and flanker Caila Ney gathered the ball in advantage play. Caila took the ball wide along the touch line when IU's Carli Johnston covered the field and took Caila into touch on a, uh, moderately high tackle. UWM won the ensuing lineout, and drove the ball up field until again run into touch by the Indiana defense. After some transition of possession at the lineout, Indiana was awarded a scrum for lineout throw not in straight. Indiana won the scrum deep in their own territory, but knocked on. UWM won the scrummage, and flyhalf Lindsey Fickau took the ball between the centers to touch down for a try at 16:17. Brittany Houston took the conversion attempt at 16:54, but failed to find her mark. The Panther lead was now 20-7.
UWM returned the restart kick to Indiana after second-phase ball, and took Indiana into touch. UWM lost the lineout, but pressured Indiana, gaining ground and again running the ball carrier into touch. UWM secured possession in the lineout and began to move up field on a driving maul from the lineout. UWM knocked forward on their up field drive, and Indiana kicked away possession. The ball bobbled on the hardpan surface of King Field, and fullback Jenny Welch lost the ball into touch. UWM lost the lineout, but applied enough defensive pressure to force a turnover moving the ball to within five meters of the goal line before being run into touch. UWM secured possession of the ball at the lineout and drove their maul into in-goal before losing possession. Indiana chipped the ball away to alleviate pressure and were awarded a scrum for their efforts after UWM knocked on the catch. Indiana won the scrummage, and Indiana kicked for position. Substitute fullback Dena Craddock fielded the ball and squared her shoulders up field. She took the ball into contact, but UWM had too few numbers to retain possession. UWM Immediately counter-rucked on Indiana's second phase possession and regained the ball. Brittany Houston spun the ball wide to replacement flyhalf Tina Gill who offloaded to inside center Jessica Winkowski. Jessica went through five Indiana defenders on her way towards the goal line before she was caught from behind by the Indiana defense. Jessica knocked the ball forward at the tackle, so unfortunately outside center Kara Knox's touchdown was brought back to an Indiana scrum at 5 meters. Indiana won the scrummage, but the pass from the IU scrumhalf didn't find it's mark. Although IU knocked-on in-goal, they were awarded another 5 meter scrum. This time the Panthers stole the put, and Brittany Houston fired the ball to flyhalf Tina GIll on the blind side. Tina offloaded the ball and Caila Ney peeled the ball out of the ensuing maul to touch down for a try at 29:26. The conversion attempt by Tina Gill missed its mark, and the Panther lead stayed at 25-7.
Caila Ney took the ensuing kickoff to the IU 22m where she received another brutal tackle around the neck that didn't receive a penalty. UWM reestablished control in the forwards with phase play, but UWM was penalized for obstruction in the backline. Indiana opted for the scrum, but the Panthers wheeled the scrum past 90 degrees and regained possession. No. 8 Kati McCormick took the ball strong and offloaded to flyhalf Tina Gill. Tina spun the ball wide, but the backs were a bit flat and missed the pass. Flanker Caila Ney picked up the ball and took it to within 5 meters of the goal line before being run into touch by the IU defense. Indiana won the lineout and fullback Dena Craddock mishandled the catch just prior to offloading to replacement inside center Maggie Garnica. Indiana gained possession at the scrummage and kicked to gain space. Fullback Dena Craddock took the ball and returned the kick up field The Indiana fullback responded with a kick of her own which was fielded by replacement blind side wing Cassidy Boen. Cassidy took the ball up field on a strong run and was the recipient of another brutal Indiana high tackle. The referee actually caught this one, and UWM was awarded a penalty. UWM took the ball wide on two phases ending with passes from Gill to Garnica to replacement outside center Carissa Knox (sister-in-law of Kara Knox) who moved the ball to within feet of the goal line. However the rucking support was light from UW-Milwaukee and Indiana wing Carli Johnston picked the ball and took it back up field against a run over-committed Panther back three. IU's Johnston offloaded to loose head prop Shawn Ridinger who took the ball the rest of the way to touch down at 36:56. The conversion attempt was not good, and Indiana had cut the Panther lead down to 25-12.
Soon after, the final whistle sounded, and the Panthers found themselves victorious.
