The UWM Baja SAE team travelled to Arkansaw, WI to compete in the 2011 Backwoods Baja. The race featured 23 vehicles from around the region. Schools such as Michigan Tech, UW-Madison and Iowa State were in attendance.
An organization high 19-memebers made the trip. Chassis 41 was lead by Jake Berman and Chassis 42 was lead by Alex Dirring. Track conditions were dry and the weather was perfect for the event. Chassis 42's race strategy was simple: survive. And once again it proved to work. It was off the track a total of 3 minutes, those 3 minutes were used to change drivers and refuel.
UWM's secondary vechicle, Chassis 41 faired well agianst the technical track. It was able to complete the race under its own power and had a limited number of mechanical failures which led to a 15th place finish overall.
Chassis 42 endured the 4-hour race and took 1st place for the third year in a row at this particular event. 150 laps were completed, over 1,600 bumps and jumps were taken and even a flip was encoutered. Durablity proved to be the key to success again.
