What is UWM WiFi?


UWM WiFi is a new wireless service currently available in the Union, the Golda Meir Library, Bolton Hall, Lapham Hall, Lubar Hall, Engineering & Mathematical Sciences, Zilber School of Public Health, the Global Water Center, Mitchell Hall, the Music Building, and Arts Center Lecture Hall with possible expansion to other areas of campus to replace the PROWLnet wireless service. UWM WiFi offers four service options to access wireless service: UWMWiFi (ePanther authenticated; requires device set-up), UWMSponsored, eduroam (requires device set-up), and Public.


Why do I have to set up my device?


The UWMWiFi authenticated and eduroam access options each require a device configuration for Mac and Windows-based laptops, tablets, and iPhone and Android smart phones. Once your device is set up, you will have immediate access to the wireless service without having to re-input your ePantherID and password. There are some exceptions; for example, some Mac operating systems require input of ePantherID and password each time access is desired even though the device has been set up.


Where do I find information about how to set up my device?


Instructions for manually setting up personally-owned devices on UWMWiFi are available on the UWMWIFI Set-up Instructions Web page. Instructions for manually setting up personally-owned devices on eduroam are available on the eduroam Setup Instruction Web page.  In addition, instructions for manual set-up are available at the Library Learning Commons IT Consultant Desk and at the Bolton 225 Walk-in Help Desk which is open Monday–Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Consultants at the Walk-in Help Desk and the Library Learning Commons IT Consultant Desk are also available at those times, and can personally assist you in your set-up or trouble shoot possible problems with your device set-up. If you have a personally-owned laptop with Windows 7 or Windows 8, your operating system is up-to-date and your laptop is virus-free, you may want to use the UWMWIFi Automated Set-up Tool. Individuals with University-owned devices should consult with their local IT professional.


Why can’t I just use the “Public” option rather than going through the set-up to use the UWMWiFi authenticated option?


The Public option is not secure because the signal is not encrypted. The Public option is NOT recommended if you’re going to be conducting University business. In addition, the Public option is for Web-only access, has limited bandwidth, and disconnects after one hour without warning (although you can reconnect for another one-hour session).


How is UWM WiFi different from PROWLnet? Is PROWLnet still available?


UWM WiFi uses the latest wireless technology to provide secure, faster, more reliable wireless service than PROWLnet. PROWLnet will continue to be available in areas throughout campus until the possible installation of UWM WiFi. All University buildings are clearly marked with a small sign at the entrance doors indicating which wireless service is available in the building.


Why is the service so slow OR why do I keep getting a dropped connection OR why can’t I get connected?


First, make sure that you have set up your device and you’re connecting to UWMWiFi, not the Public option which has limited bandwidth and is designed to timeout after one hour of use. If you are using the UWMWiFi option, report your problem to the UWM Help Desk; indicate your specific location (building, floor, area) so that the problem can be investigated.


What should I do if I have a problem or a question?


If you encounter a problem either in setting up your device or using UWMWiFi, contact the UWM Help Desk at 414-229-4040, toll-free at 877-381-3459 or use on the online request form at GetTechHelp.uwm.edu. You may also want to stop at the Walk-in Help Desk located in Bolton 225 or at the Library Learning Commons IT Consultant Desk. Consultants are available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
