Robert J. Beck named Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer
On Jan. 13, 2014 Robert J. Beck, Ph.D. began his new role as UWM Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer (CIO). He previously served as the College of Letters and Science’s CIO (2003-14) and as Director of Academic Technology for UWM’s Center for International Education (2000-11). Prior to his arrival in 2000, Dr. Beck directed Tufts University’s Center for Teaching Excellence (1998-2000) and taught for eight years in the University of Virginia’s Department of Government & Foreign Affairs.
"I'm honored and excited to be collaborating with local, regional and national research, education and technology leaders who share my commitment to the effective use and strategic deployment of cyberinfrastructure," said Beck.
In 2012, Dr.Beck received the UWM Faculty Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award largely due to his reputation for applying the latest classroom technology with a dedicated personal approach to teaching. As a tenured faculty member in UWM’s Department of Political Science, he continues to offer a blended course in international law. Marcus Ethridge, former Political Science Department Chair noted that Beck not only uses technology well in the classroom – he also writes, researches and teaches about it. “No instructor in my acquaintance has devoted as much time and energy to the teaching enterprise as Bob has,” he said. Former student Bianca Pearson, who graduated as a special agent from the FBI Academy in Jan. 2013 said: “To this day, Dr. Beck’s International Law and Conflict Management is still one of the most challenging and academically meaningful courses I have taken.”
As CIO, Beck works collaboratively with UITS Chief Operating Officer David Stack and the UITS team to foster close cooperation among central and distributed UWM technology factions to set institutional budget and deployment priorities that align with the teaching, research, learning, service, and administrative goals of the University and UW system.
Dr. Beck reports to Vice Chancellor Robin Van Harpen, Division of Finance and Administrative Affairs, and serves on Chancellor Lovell’s cabinet. His office is located in the Northwest Quad Building B-7459A and appointments are scheduled by Administrative Assistant Lorna Prather (firstname.lastname@example.org).
