Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence Program Requirements
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence (MC-EA) program at UWM prepares students to work in urban settings and takes place in close partnership with the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS).
Students begin by taking coursework in the College of Letters and Science and the Peck School of the Arts to provide the basis for the academic content MC-EA teachers need to know, as well as preliminary course work in the School of Education. Upon admission to the School of Education, students enter the professional program made up of four semesters, or blocks. These blocks build sequentially one upon another; students must achieve success meeting professional standards in one block before proceeding to the next. Students are placed in classrooms in MPS each semester to practice their teaching skills and demonstrate their growth. Fieldwork reflects the School of Education's commitment to a strong partnership between UWM and MPS and to meaningful links between what students learn at the University and school practice.
ADDITIONAL PROGRAM OPTIONS
Cultures and Communities Certificate. To enrich a student's background as s/he prepares to teach in urban schools, s/he may elect to pursue a certificate in Cultures and Communities. Students pursuing a certificate in Cultures and Communities begin fulfilling certificate requirements through General Education courses. Through Cultures and Communities courses, students strengthen their preparation for the teaching profession by focusing on General Education courses on multicultural awareness, intercultural communication, and the impact of globalization.
Add-On Teacher Certifications. Students in this program may add a certification in Bilingual Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), or World Languages provided they take the appropriate coursework.
Special Education Certification. Students may continue for a dual certification in special and regular education which requires a fifth year of school. Credits in the fifth year may be integrated into a Master's Program in Exceptional Education provided the student is admitted into the Graduate Program at UWM.
