Foreign Languages and Linguistics


The Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics was formed in 1996 by the merger of the former Departments of Classics and Hebrew Studies, German, Linguistics, and Slavic Languages. The curricula of these departments continue in the combined department. The department teaches modern and ancient languages, their literature, and the linguistic and philological study of these languages. The program in Linguistics also is located in this department and offers courses in Chinese and Japanese, and, from time to time, courses in several uncommonly-taught languages. The broad departmental structure encourages the development of cross-disciplinary academic undertakings.

Arabic

The Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics offers beginning and intermediate courses in Arabic. Study of this language may meet the foreign language requirement of the L&S degree. The courses also may apply in the Middle Eastern and North African Studies Certificate Program, in the International Studies Major, and in the Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies.

Chinese

In addition to offering a sequence of language courses that will meet the language requirement of the L&S degree, the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics offers a minor in Chinese. Courses in Chinese also may be of interest to students pursuing the Certificate in Asian Studies, the International Studies Major, and the Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies.

Course of Study: Minor:

The minor in Chinese consists of 19 credits distributed as follows:

• Chinese 201: Third Semester Chinese, 5 credits
• Chinese 202: Fourth Semester Chinese, 5 credits
• Chinese 301: Fifth Semester Chinese, 3 credits
• Chinese 302: Sixth Semester Chinese, 3 credits
• An additional upper-level, 3-credit language requirement to be met one of three ways:
Chinese 310: Business Chinese, 3 credits; Chinese 497: Study Abroad, 3 credits; or Chinese 699: Advanced Independent Study, 3 credits

The Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics offers six semesters of Japanese that may be of interest to students pursuing the Asian Studies certificate, the International Studies major, and the Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies. These courses will satisfy the foreign language requirement of the L&S degree.

For students interested in studying Korean to satisfy the foreign language requirement of the L&S degee, the Asian Studies Certificate, and/or the International Studies major, the Foreign Lanuguages and Linguistics Department offers a four-semester sequence in Korean.
