The Certificate Program in French and Francophone Studies promotes contacts among disciplines and cultures. It clusters courses dealing with the French-speaking world from a variety of departments: Africology, Anthropology, Art History, French, Geography, History, Journalism and Mass Communication, Philosophy, Political Science. It encourages participation in UWMs foreign study programs in France (Paris, Orleans, and Bordeaux), Canada (Montreal and Quebec), and Senegal (Dakar), and fosters interaction with students from French-speaking countries enrolled in UWM programs.
The certificate program is open to all students seeking a bachelors degree from UWM, to students who previously received a bachelors degree from UWM or any other accredited college or university, and to those who do not plan to pursue a college or university degree (non-degree students) but who have a strong interest in this subject. To be admitted to the university as non-degree students, individuals must meet regular university admission requirements. Students currently involved in baccalaureate studies who sucessfully complete the requirements of the program will be awarded the certificate at the time of graduation. Students who already have a bachelors degree and non-degree students receive the certificate upon completion of the program requirements.
Students enrolled in the program must complete at least 18 credits in approved French and Francophone studies courses. These credits must include:
a. 3 credits in a French language course numbered 200 or above;
b. 3 additional credits in humanities;
c. 6 credits in social sciences;
d. 6 credits in courses dealing with Europe;
e. 6 credits in courses dealing with Francophone areas outside of Europe; and
f. 9 credits in courses numbered 300 or above
Students must achieve a grade-point average of 2.75 or higher in the courses that satisfy the program requirements, and all such courses must be graded rather than taken on a credit/no credit basis.
Students majoring or minoring in French must take at least 9 credits outside the French curricular area.
Credits earned at other institutions in equivalent FFS courses will be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements. Students must obtain the approval of the certificate program committee to apply more than 9 credits from courses at other institutions to the UWM program.
To obtain a certificate in FFS with language proficiency, students must complete, as part of or in addition to the certificate requirements, 9 credits in language, literature, or culture courses taught in French and numbered 300 or above.
