Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies

The Certificate Program in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies is designed for students majoring in any field who wish to complement their study of a discipline with an additional concentration in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies. Any student in good standing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who is seeking a bachelor’s degree or who previously received a bachelor’s degree from UWM or any other accredited college or university is eligible to participate in the Certificate Program. The program also is open to those who do not plan to pursue a college or university degree (non-degree students) but who have a strong interest in this topic. To be admitted as non-degree students, individuals must meet regular university admission requirements.

To obtain the certificate, students must complete, with a minimum GPA of 2.50, at least 18 credits in approved lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies courses as outlined below.

a. LesbGay 200, Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies, 3 cr;

b. 9 additional credits in courses that focus primarily on lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender issues (see note * below under Approved courses) in at least two of the following three areas: 1) literary and cultural studies (English, foreign languages, art history, communication, fine arts); 2) social sciences (anthropology, economics, history, political science, sociology); and 3) behavioral and natural sciences (biology, psychology, health sciences, nursing, social welfare);

c. 6 credits selected from courses that include a significant amount of attention to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues, and/or courses with a primary focus;

d. 9 credits in courses numbered 300 or above;

e. a maximum of 6 credits in independent study;

f. a maximum of 9 credits from any one department;

g. at least half the credits taken in residence at UWM; and

h. no credits taken on a cr/no cr basis.

It is recommended that students, in their senior year, plan one independent study course or enroll in a designated section of English 629, Seminar in Literature and Sexuality, to synthesize their previous work in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies. Credits earned at other institutions in equivalent lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies courses, as well as credits earned and approved through study abroad, are accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements. Students must obtain the approval of the Certificate Program Committee to apply more than nine credits from courses at other institutions to the program requirements.

The following are some of the courses approved for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Certificate. Courses marked with an asterisk (*) have a primary focus on LGBT issues. The others include secondary but still significant attention to these issues. Some variable content courses, depending on the topic, may qualify as courses with a primary focus on LGBT issues.
