University Neighborhoods Association

The University Neighborhoods Association (UNA) is a collaborative partnership consisting of representatives from UW-Milwaukee, the City of Milwaukee, Columbia-St. Mary's, Milwaukee County, and the leaders Murray Hill Neighborhood Association, Cambridge Woods Neighborhood Association, Mariners Neighborhood Association, and the Water Tower Landmark Trust.

UNA formed in 2001, with members meeting every other month to discuss issues of importance to all stakeholders. The true cooperative nature of the association is expressed in the location of meetings: each meeting a different representative group hosts the meeting and takes minutes. Meetings give members the opportunity to share information, discuss concerns and issues, and work together to make positive changes in the areas around UWM.

In 2003, UNA evolved and expanded to take on a significant task. With the June 2003 completion of the planning study, "A Strategy and Vision for the UWM Neighborhoods," which examines the neighborhood issues of parking, transit, housing, and quality of life, UNA became the main entity responsible for implementing recommendations from the study. The study strongly conveys the concept that very little can be accomplished without collaboration and cooperation, which is the notion behind the creation of the University Neighborhoods Association. Thus UNA was the ideal group to take the iniatives brought forward by the study and work to make them a reality.
