UREC Outdoor Pursuits is dedicated to providing programs and equipment which promote challenging, educational, environmentally thoughtful and fun experiences for students with various interests and abilities.

The Outdoor Pursuits Center is located in the Klotsche Center & Pavilion room 131A.
Our programs and gear are CURRENTLY only for current enrolled UWM Students.

Lake Park Backcountry Brunch 9/6
10:30am-12:00pm
Come join Outdoor Pursuits for our first event of the year! All are welcome to enjoy a backcountry style brunch at Lake Park with lawn game, a slackline and plenty of time to swap summer stories. $5.00

SUP It Up! On Lake Michigan 9/10
5:00pm-7:00pm
Beginner and intermediate Stand Up Paddleboarders will enjoy an evening tour along the Lake Michigan coastline. $15

Point Beach New Student Overnight 9/19-9/20
Depart 3pm Return 5pm
Students new to UWM will enjoy a weekend of hiking, paddling, and relaxing at one of Point Beach State Forest’s rustic cabins. Explore the park, cook great food, and enjoy music and meeting other students who enjoy being outdoors around the fire. $45

Devil’s Lake Multisport Weekend 9/26-9/28
Depart 3pm Return 5pm
This is a weekend for exciting challenge and enjoying the fall colors at Wisconsin’s most famous climbing destination. We will climb, paddle, play lawn games, cook great food, and finish each day with a fire and s’mores! $110

Swiftwater Paddling Day 10/4
Depart 8am Return 7pm
We will run a section of one of Wisconsin’s great waterways featuring fun riffles. Location will vary with water levels. $45

Fall Colors Photography Hike 10/11
Depart 9am Return 4pm
Grab your camera and snap some pictures of the scenery during at Lapham Peak in the Kettle Moraine State Forest. We will spend the day hiking the trails and stop for lunch at the observation tower. $20


Intro to Backpacking Weekend: Ice Age Trail 10/17-10/19
Depart 3pm Return 3pm
Enjoy a weekend away while learning about gear, route planning, safety, and backcountry comfort. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, you will learn something and have a fun weekend on the trails! $90


Devils Lake Costume Climb Day 10/25
Depart 9am Return 7pm
Our final climbing trip for the season will to be Devils Lake! Bring your best costume and come climb some classic routes. $45

 

Governor Dodge Volunteer Overnight 11/1-11/2
Depart 9am Return 3pm
Governor Dodge State Park sustained significant damage after a tornado swept through on June 29. Come out and help us clear debris and beautify this lovely spot. There will be plenty of time on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning to enjoy this special place! $65

 

Lower Wisconsin Riverway Paddling Trip 11/7-11/9
Depart 1pm
A full weekend of paddling the Lower Wisconsin River and two nights of backcountry fun. We will paddle an iconic stretch of river, sleep on sandbars and enjoy great food! $110

 

East Side Orienteering Race 11/22
Arrive 8:30am Starts 9am Lunch and Awards at 12:30pm
Register your team of up to 4 competitors for this fast paced event. Navigate Milwaukee’s East Side to find locations, complete challenges and test your endurance. Collect as many points as you can! Each member of the winning team will leave with a trophy and all will receive a t-shirt for participating. We will conclude the day with a banquet and slideshow!

9/24 Bits n Bobs
From cams to slings, ropes to webbing…Climbing gear is shiny and fun! We will take you through the gear OP has and how we use it. FREE

 

10/1 Reading Rivers
If you love to paddle or you’re just interested in knowing more, come to this awesome clinic where we will discuss the basics of how to be safe and have a great time in a swiftwater environment. We will talk about river features, hazards, special training and how to plan for success. FREE

 

10/14 Alcohol Stoves
1 cat food can + 1 hole puncher + denatured alcohol + basic instruction= FIREBALL…no we will safely learn to make a real live stove that YOU can take with you to boil REAL live water. We will demo both the cat food can stove and the soda can stove. It’s a good time and who doesn’t like fire, come on?! $5.00

10/15 Know Before You Go
We will answer all of your burning questions about what to wear, setting up camp, peeing in the woods, using external speakers at your campsite and how to keep critters away from your tent. This is campcraft, wilderness etiquette and backcountry basics all rolled into one folks. Yep, that’s 3 for the price of 1=FREE

 

10/22 Natural Climbing Anchors
Let our very own Hobo Joe give you the 411 on using natural features like trees and boulders to create safe anchors for climbing. FREE

 

10/29 Gear Anchors
Hobo Joe Returns! to offer guidance and instruction on placing traditional rock climbing protection to create bomber anchors. Come check out Outdoor Pursuits’ brand new trad wall built specifically for gear placement training! FREE

 

11/5 Crochet
Learn how to make your own hat or scarf for all of your winter activities! Bring your own project or use our hooks and yarn to get the hang of it before trying on your own. We’ll bring the hot drinks! FREE

 

11/11 Wild Med
Spend an hour with Boots, one of our Wilderness First Responders here at OP. She will give you tips and tricks for preventing and treating common ailments and injuries in the out-of-doors. FREE

11/12 Fast n Light
We will be cooking up one of our favorite fast and light one-pot meals! This is a great clinic for anyone who has always thought camping means ramen noodles and beanie weenies. OP knows how to do dinner right! $5.00

 

11/19 Knit
Learn how to make your own hat or scarf for all of your winter activities! Bring your own project or use our hooks and yarn to get the hang of it before trying on your own. We’ll bring the hot drinks! FREE

 

11/20 Red Fred: Navigation
This is a great clinic to take if you’re participating in the OP Orienteering Race. Brush up on your nav skills or learn some new ones. We will talk about taking a bearing, orientating a map, using handrails, the three kinds of North and that illusive concept-declination. FREE

12/3 Dessert
We will make a scrumptious fruit cobbler which is great after dinner or for a warm breakfast treat. $5.00

 

12/12 Study Break Movie Marathon
OP will be open from 10am-8pm with snacks and adventure movies all day! Get your study on, then take a break with Outdoor Pursuits. FREE
