The UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) is pleased to have been selected as one of 20 international teams, and the only team from Wisconsin, to participate in the 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition (sponsored by the US Department of Energy). The competition promises to provide unique benefits and learning opportunities for our students, faculty, sponsors and the community.

The UWM entry in the competition will be designed and first built in Wisconsin before it is shipped to Washington DC for installation on the National Mall in fall 2009. To produce a winning design UWM SARUP will seek the engagement of businesses, organizations, foundations and individuals as competition sponsors. Media and event exposure from last year’s (2007) Solar Decathlon competition reached an audience of more than 1 billion. As interest in renewable energy and carbon neutral design heightens, the audience for the 2009 event is expected to be even larger.

UWM SARUP has identified recognition opportunities for 2009 Solar Decathlon Sponsors. Financial support and tangible in-kind sponsorships to the Solar Decathlon project via the UWM Foundation are tax deductible as allowed by law and by Foundation practices. The list of sponsorship opportunities provided by UWM SARUP is not finite. We are open to discussion of other sponsorships related to the 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition.

Competition Set-up/Display Sponsor:

• $50,000: Provides for the reconstruction and set-up of the Solar Home on the
Wasington Mall. Funds will also assist in covering expenses related to signage/display installation at the National Mall site.

Furnishings/Finishing Sponsor:

• $40,000 Provides for the in-home furnishings and finishing.
• $30,000 Provides exterior finishing and landscaping.

Communication Sponsor:

• $25,000 Provides for the creation and production of competition signage, materials and the website for the UWM Solar Decathlon Competition House as well as the production of a business plan for the project.

Travel Sponsor:

• $25,000 Provides for travel and housing in Washington DC for the 2009
UWM Team.
• $10,000 Provides for the travel and participation of the Solar Decathlon Team in a pre-competition workshop in Washington DC. The team will also utilize this trip to conduct site coordination for the competition.

Research Sponsor

• $20,000/yr Provides for the participation of a research assistant to conduct broader study on the market viability and design aesthetics of solar housing.

Lecture/Workshop Sponsor

• $15,000 Provides for a three-part lecture series (summer 2008-spring 2009).
The sponsor’s name will be attached to all materials utilized in
promoting the lecture series.
• $5,000 Provides support for the participation of a lecture participant (open
to the public) and follow-up studio workshop (for student competition participants).

Scholarship Sponsor

• $5,000 Provides for the one-semester participation of a UWM School of
Architecture and Urban Planning student in the Solar Decathlon
Competition.
