Online Tutoring

Please be aware that our online tutoring sessions are meant to be interactive and collaborative, just as our face-to-face sessions. We have found, however, that it may take more time to accomplish the same amount of work online than it would if you met in person. This online exchange between writer and tutor - including learning the technology, reading, typing, and waiting for responses - is a time-consuming process.

What you should know about our Online Tutoring Sessions:

  • Although available to all UWM writers, online tutoring is intended primarily for distance learners and students in online courses who cannot meet face-to-face.

  • You must be present AT ALL TIMES during your entire online session, even when you are waiting for the tutor to read or reply to your paper. If it appears that you have abandoned the session, the tutor will immediately log off.

  • You are welcome to work with us online at all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming to final revisions, even if you do not yet have a draft to upload.

  • Working online with detailed/technical issues such as MLA or APA citation formats or grammar/punctuation can be difficult and usually does not lend itself to the collaborative nature of our sessions. We reserve the right to invite you to make a face-to-face appointment if we determine the work is unsuitable for an online session.

  • When making the appointment, you will be asked several questions about your writing project, e.g. due date and your paper's focus.

  • Depending on your paper's length and time constraints, it might not be possible to read the entire paper.

  • We urge you to log into the Online Scheduler approximately five to ten minutes before the start of your appointment. Click on the Control Panel, and click "Meet Consultant Online" to the right of your appointment details.
