Direct Loan Entrance Counseling

Undergraduate and Graduate Student Stafford Loan Borrowers:

A first-time Federal Stafford Loan borrower is required to complete Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling before any Stafford Loan funds can be disbursed. You are considered a first-time Stafford Loan borrower if you have never borrowed a Stafford Loan through either the Direct Loan or Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Programs. During Stafford Entrance Counseling, borrowers are provided important information with regard to their rights as well as the responsibilities they assume when borrowing a student loan. In an effort to provide this information when it is most convenient to the borrower, all students wishing to borrow a Federal Stafford Loan are asked to complete this requirement online.

By selecting the link Entrance Counseling you will be directed to the federal student loan website.  Once there, you will want to Sign In and select Complete Counseling.  You have three counseling options.  While you will find the Financial Awareness Counseling useful, you will need to make sure you are selecting "Entrance Counseling to proceed with the Stafford Loan tutorial and quiz. Please be careful to use your correct Social Security Number (SSN.) The Financial Aid Office will retrieve the results electronically and if you use an incorrect SSN, we will not be able to document that you have completed this requirement.

In addition to completing Entrance Counseling, a first-time Federal Direct Stafford loan borrower must also complete an MPN before any Direct Stafford Loan funds will disburse. Complete your MPN on the same website,, but after signing in with your PIN, select "Complete Master Promissory Note.

Generally, you are only required to complete Stafford entrance counseling and an MPN once. However, a mid-year transfer student may need to complete Entrance Counseling prior to receiving loan funds at UW Milwaukee even if they received Stafford loans at their former school.
