Admissions and Enrollment

Application Process

You have reviewed the admission requirements and are ready to take the next steps. Here's what you need to do:
  1. Decide When to Apply
You are encouraged to apply early. The sooner UWM receives a completed application, the sooner you will receive an admission decision! Applications for fall semester are due no later than July 1, although they will be accepted from September of the previous year. The spring semester deadline is December 1 but we will begin accepting those the preceding summer.

There is an application deadline, too! If you want to start in the fall, the deadline is July 1. If you are thinking about coming to school in the spring, the deadline is December 1.

Just like the admission requirements, some schools and colleges have their own deadlines:

School of Architecture and Urban Planning You need to submit a complete application by January 1 for the summer/fall semester or November 1 for the spring semester. Applications completed after these deadlines may be reviewed on a space available basis. Please contact the School of Architecture and Urban Planning if you have further questions at sarup-advising@uwm.edu or 414-229-4015.

Peck School of the Arts For scholarship consideration, please apply by March 15 for fall admission. Please contact the Peck School of the Arts if you need more information at 414-229-4763.
  2. Complete the Application
We encourage you to complete the online application although you may complete the paper application. Our office receives online applications the first business day after you submit them. These applications make it easy to pay the application processing fee with the credit card option. You need to pay the application fee unless you have previously attended UWM as a degree candidate, or if you are transferring directly from one of the thirteen 2-year campuses in the UW System.

The same paper application is used at all UW System campuses and is available at all Wisconsin high schools, many Illinois high schools, and always by mail. To have application materials sent to you, please contact the Department of Admissions and Recruitment at 414-229-2222.

You have several options for paying your application fee. You may pay with a credit card when submitting an electronic or paper application, or you may mail a check or money order to:

    University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
    Office of Undergraduate Admissions
    P.O. Box 749
    Milwaukee, WI 53201-0749

  3. Send Us Supporting Documents to Complete Your Application
Transcript You are required to submit official high school and all postsecondary transcripts. The high school transcript must have all four years of high school with grades and a graduation date posted. You should contact your high school and all colleges attended to request an official transcript be sent to:

    University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
    Office of Undergraduate Admissions
    P.O. Box 749
    Milwaukee, WI 53201-0749

If you are using UPS, FedEx or other ground shipment companies to send us your transcripts, please address them to:

    University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
    Office of Undergraduate Admissions
    Vogel Hall
    3253 North Downer Ave.
    Milwaukee, WI 53211-3363

Official transcripts from each institution attended beyond high school must be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as well. An official transcript is usually sent from one institution to another with an official school seal. (Please note that if you open the official transcript envelope, the transcript will no longer be considered official). Transcripts can be requested in person or in writing from the institution's Registrar's office. Click here for more information on how to request a transcript from a UW System campus to be sent to UWM.

If you have completed your GED or HSED, you are required to submit an official high school transcript and an official copy of your GED/HSED test scores.

Please note, with the exception of summer session, UWM cannot make an admit decision for a transfer applicant with two semesters of outstanding work. For example, if you are currently enrolled elsewhere and wanted to apply for the Summer or Fall term at UWM, you would need to submit a college transcript that included grades for the previous Fall semester (if the transfer school was on a semester system). If the transfer school were on a quarter system, this transcript would need to include grades for the previous Winter quarter. If you wanted to apply for the Spring term, the transfer college transcript would need to include grades for the previous Spring term.

Test Scores UWM typically does not require transfer students to submit official ACT/SAT scores, but occasionally a student may be asked to submit them. You will be notified if test scores are required.

If you have taken Advance Placement exams (AP), International Baccalaureate exams (IB), or the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams and would like UWM to evaluate these scores for possible credit, please have scores sent from these testing agencies to the Department of Admissions and Recruitment. UWM cannot accept scores appearing on other college transcripts. We need the official score report from the original testing agency to consider the results for credit awards.

  4. Now it is Our Turn to Make an Admission Decision
Once we have received all the information we requested from you, your application is considered complete. Then it is our turn to make an admission decision. We want to review your documents carefully and since we process over 10,000 applications each year, this can take some time. Please allow 6-8 weeks during peak application periods for us to process your completed application.

  5. Visit Campus
Visiting UWM and taking a tour will give you a personal feel for campus, the ability to ask current students questions, gather information on campus resources and activities, and so much more. Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 414-229-2222 to schedule a tour.

To help you with the layout of the campus before you arrive, view a map of UWM.

Deadlines

Applications received by the dates indicated below will be considered for admission:
  • Fall Term – July 1
  • Spring Term – December 1
We admit students on a “rolling” basis, reviewing complete applications turned in before the deadline in the order received. You are encouraged to apply early. The sooner UWM receives a completed application, the sooner you will receive an admission decision. Most transfer applicants will receive an admission decision approximately four to six weeks from the time the application file is complete.

Please note: there are earlier application deadlines for some of our most competitive programs. In order to be given full consideration, please meet the following deadlines:
  • School of Architecture and Urban Planning You need to submit a complete application by January 1 for the summer/fall semester or November 1 for the spring semester. Applications completed after these deadlines may be reviewed on a space available basis. Please contact the School of Architecture and Urban Planning if you have further questions at sarup-advising@uwm.edu or 414-229-4015.
  • Peck School of the Arts You need to complete your application by January 1 for the fall/summer semester or November 1 for the spring semester to receive priority. Applications completed after these dates may be reviewed on a space available basis. Please contact the Peck School of the Arts if you need more information at 414-229-4763.

Application Materials

Transfer applicants must submit all of the following (addresses/locations listed below):
  1. Application for Admission. You can apply online or download a paper application.
  2. Application Fee. This nonrefundable $44 application fee must accompany your application. Online applicants can pay the fee by credit card at the time of submission. Paper applicants and online applicants who did not submit credit card payment at the time of submission can pay by check or money order (payable to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; see address below). Do not send cash. You may also pay by credit card over the phone by calling our Info Center at 414-229-3800.

If your last institution attended is one of the two-year University of Wisconsin Colleges (freshman/sophomore campuses), or if you previously attended UWM as a degree candidate, you do not have to pay the $44 application fee.
  3. Official High School Transcripts. We require official high school transcripts. We will use your high school record to check for proof of graduation, the completion of core high school preparation requirements, and to learn more about your educational background. Transcripts should be sent to us directly from your high school. If you have earned your General Educational Development (GED) certificate or a High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED), you will need to submit your official score report in addition to an official transcript showing all work completed at the high school.
  4. Official College Transcripts. You must submit official transcripts for every college or university you've attended. We do not accept transfer credits from one institution posted on another college transcript. Transcripts must be sent directly from each college or university attended and should include all college-level course work completed to date (including that taken while in high school, if applicable) and your current term in progress.

Transcripts generally must be requested in person, in writing, or sometimes online from the institution's Registrar's office or equivalent. Click here for more information on how to request a transcript from a UW System campus to be sent to UWM.
  5. Official Test Scores. ACT and/or SAT test scores are typically not required for transfer admission. However, test scores are required if you have completed fewer than 12 transferrable credits. Test scores should be sent directly from the testing service. Our test codes are 4658 for the ACT and 1473 for the SAT. Students whose native language is not English and who were not educated in an entirely English-speaking country will likely need to submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Visit our international admissions website for more details.
  6. Statements. The statements requested on the application form are an important part of your application. They are your opportunity to clarify your academic goals and explain any unusual or extenuating circumstances that may have affected your academic performance. It will be to your advantage to provide us with all the details you would like us to know before we make a decision on your application.
  7. Letters of Recommendation. Though not required, a letter of recommendation may be helpful, particularly if it is from someone who can attest to your academic ability or explain factors that may have affected your previous academic performance.

Admission Decisions

Applications are reviewed in the order completed, and decisions are generally made within four to six weeks. We cannot begin to review your application until all required materials are received. Review our list of required application materials listed above to ensure you submit a complete application.

Please note, with the exception of summer session, UWM cannot make an admit decision for a transfer applicant with two semesters of unreported work. We cannot accept courses in progress for both the Fall and Spring term. For example, if you are currently enrolled elsewhere for the Fall term, and will be enrolled at that institution for the Spring semester as well, but want to come to UWM for the following Fall, you would need to wait until your current Fall courses are complete.
