Academic Personnel
Academic Personnel, also known as Unclassified Staff, are engaged in teaching, university administration, and/or professional services related to instruction and research. Academic Personnel include faculty, academic staff and limited appointments.
Faculty are persons who hold the rank of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, or instructor in an academic department or its functional equivalent. The two types of faculty appointments are probationary and tenured.
Academic Staff
Academic staff are teaching and non-teaching professional and administrative personnel, other than faculty and classified staff, with duties and types of appointments that are primarily associated with higher education institutions or their administration.
Executive Administrative Staff
A person in executive administrative appointment serves at the pleasure of the authorized official who made the appointment. By law, certain positions must be designated as limited appointments, such as Chancellor, Provost, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Academic Program Director, Department Chairperson, et al.

Classified civil service positions are those positions that are not included in the unclassified service. These positions are classified under the authority of the Office of State Employment Relations and governed by Wisconsin Administrative Code Employment Relations (ER) and Employment Relations - Merit Recruitment and Selection (ER-MRS). Classified service also includes Limited Term Employment (LTE).
