Students of Religious Studies

Religious Studies Student Organization

Description: Our purpose is to give students an official voice within both the Religious Studies program and UWM. Additionally, we want to help create a relaxed and safe atmosphere for the academic, non-sectarian study of all religions. We sponsor events that bring about a deeper understanding of religion and how it pertains to other fields of study.

Sikh Temple Visit

On Sunday, October 21, 2012 Dr. Judith Beall and the UWM Religious Studies Student Organization (RSSO) visited the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, the site of the August 5 shooting. The RSSO was met by UWM professor Dr. Swarnjit S. Arora, himself a Sikh, who instructed them on the proper manner to dress and behave in a Sikh temple. Refreshments were served, Dr. Arora delivered a brief lecture on the history and practices of the Sikh faith and the members of the RSSO observed the memorials to the shooting victims. Afterwards, the RSSO joined the congregation of the temple for a typical religious ceremony consisting of prayers, songs and readings from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh religious text. The afternoon was concluded with a Langar, or communal meal, during which the members of the RSSO could meet members of the temple community and reflect on what they had experienced that day. The members of RSSO wish to express their gratitude to Dr. Arora and the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin for their hospitality, and our most heartfelt condolences to the victims of this tragedy and their loved ones.
