Research & Instructional Support
The UWM Libraries Research and Instructional Support Department (RIS) provides reference assistance, instructional services, and guidance on the use of library materials and collections. RIS staff assist users in the use and interpretation of library resources, and provide instruction to groups and individuals. Our goal is to help you find the information you need, while teaching you how to become a self-sufficient library user.
With over two dozen staff and student workers, we are the largest department in the library. Here's what we did just last year!
- Over 8,000 questions answered online
- Over 300 research consultations
- Over 600 classes taught
We work with the UWM School of Information Studies to provide graduate internships and field work opportunities to students. Students find the real life experience and training working in a library an invaluable supplement to their education. If you are interested in working in RIS, see our Student Employment site for a list of current openings.
The RIS Department maintains the Government Information Collection as well as the Reference Collection. The Reference Collection contains periodical and newspaper indexes and abstracts, encyclopedias, dictionaries, statistical data, directories, handbooks, bibliographies, and related materials. Additionally, our website provides access to a substantial number of online resources, all of which serve as a gateway for conducting library research.
