His laughter and spirit contagious, Robert Key walks into the UWM Silver Spring Community Nursing Center excited to learn if the latest adjustments to his diet will affect his numbers. Blood pressure. Blood sugar. Weight.
The self-employed home contractor calls himself “a work in progress.” He credits the center with keeping him alive.
Key is one of thousands of un/underinsured people in Milwaukee who are touched by UWM College of Nursing (CON) community nursing centers every year. The centers are located in two of Milwaukee’s poorest zip codes, where they’ve made their homes for more than two decades.
Laughter and tears coincide in this video. Feelings of hopelessness are replaced with mindsets of self-confidence and self-care. The Lundeen Model for Nurse-Managed Primary Health Care, created by CON Dean Sally Lundeen, is working, making UWM an international leader in providing health care to the urban poor.
